Baby clothes - how much are you willing to spend?

Any one else surprised at the cost of some of the infant clothing? I love shopping but am a pretty savvy shopper - trying to find the best deal on the items I like. So far I purchased quite a bit for our new baby but all of it off the sales rack because $50 for a single outfit which could last at most 3 months seems just crazy to me.

How much are you willing to spend on infant clothing items for your baby?

What's been the most expensive clothing item you've purchased to date?

I purchased a smocked dress for my alma mater that was over $100.  I pretty much have no limit when it comes to cute baby girl things.

around $20 seems to be my limit for a single piece of clothing although I guess that might have change in winter-time.

cardigan for $19 and robeez shoes on sale for $14
  • I still haven't bought much clothing.  I don't think I will be shopping for brand names and expensive stuff just yet.  Babies outgrow them so quickly and some of it will probably get ruined due to spit ups, etc.
  • I am so not going to lie, LO's home coming outfit cost me 60$ (well my mother) and I bought a pair of baby shoes for 80$ but everything else is pretty reasonable...

  • I haven't bought anything yet but I am like you. While I love to shop and I think they have the cutest baby outfits out there, I can't justify spending $50 on an outfit that LO will wear a couple of times. I think I will mostly look for sales items too. And we have been lucky to get some hand-me-downs from our friends that have a 2-year-old girl.
  • We bought very little with DD, and haven't bought anything new this go round.  The most expensive thing to date we've ever bought for DD was a $30 coat, and since it has a removable liner it actually functions as three coats (liner is light, outer is heavy, and can double up for really cold days).

Just not into pouring the $$ into baby/kid clothes, personally.

  • I know! It's crazy when you think that you could get a nice tee for yourself on sale for $14.99 and a baby hoodie ON SALE is $10...maybe I'm just cheap. I'm hoping for some great hand me downs, but otherwise I've been hitting sales. I REALLY want to get a Gap zip hoodie for him though, sooo I'm sure I'll use a coupon for that, and get a bigger size as well. I'm always shocked at how much people will spend when it'll get thrown up on and outgrown so quickly. Some things I guess could be gender neutral ie Osh Kosh denim overalls (another one I want!), but I think maybe I'm just too much of a bargain hunter. To each their own!

Pretty much this, except that my LO's smocked dress is DH's alma mater, not mine (I went to an all-girls college).  I can't wait to dress her up and take her to football games this fall!

  • I've bought very little so far and what I did buy was just from the old navy clearance rack. I'm a pretty savvy/bargain shopper myself, and having 2 tween stepsons, makes me even more of a bargain shopper. I won't spend $50 on an outfit for them (unless it is for a special occassion), so I definitely won't be spending $50 on an outfit on the new LO that will outgrow it so quickly. Crap, my oldest stepson (13) has outgrown his jeans in 2 months (length wise), so it is a never ending battle with growing kids. LOL!
  • My weakness is baby shoes so I might spend 30 bucks on shoes (which could still be worse). But I like to shop outlet malls and places like Ross so I can get more stuff for less money. My most expensive outfit is only 12 dollars so far. At such a young age the kids don't care anyways.
  • I'm also a savvy shopper and I say you can find amazingly adorable and beautiful clothing for great prices.  Maybe for a winter coat I'd spend $40 but aside from that I think everything I've bought (which is  alotEmbarrassed) is under $25.

  • DD has several handmade dresses that are around $50 or so.  I will pay more for an item if it's handmade or OOAK.

Her everyday clothing is pretty cheap.  She's SO tiny though that she gets a TON of wear out of anything I buy her.  So I've never been in the "I'm not paying this much because it will only last 3 months" mindset.  Her seasonal clothing lasts the entire season.

  • I would have to say probably DS's Christmas outfit from Janie & Jack.  He also had a pair of Uggs.

Sadly enough, I spend more time shopping for DS than myself.  He is basically a poster child for the Gap.  I am not really into all the matchie-matchie stuff at places like Carters.

  • I would spend more on a christening, birthday or special holiday or picture outfit, but so far, I've limited myself to <$20 for any one outfit.

I can't say the same for myself and the outfits and accessories I'll be sporting...

Those are SO CUTE!!! If I weren't on a budget, I'd probably be splurging for something like that, too! We will probably spend a bit to get LO a fedora though. DH is just dying for his little man to wear one. It's his trademark for when he plays a show...always with the fedora.

  • I haven't bought any clothing yet! We were handed down a ton then also received a lot at my shower... I think the only thing I might look into buying anytime soon is the coming home outfit and I don't plan on spending much, they grow to fast! (This is coming from a broke college student as well so yea... if I had the extra money I would probably just go for it lol)

  • $50-80 woulb be ok for something really nice- ie take baby in wedding to, etc.

  • I don't have a "limit" but most of the things I've bough so far have been fairly reasonable...that way I can buy A LOT!  I don't think there's anything wrong with spending a lot on special outfits as long it fits your budget.

OH CUTE! I would want one too, See my reasoning of it is that I save all my LO's first shoes and home coming outfits and shadow box them. So for me its a keepsake... We already had everything else we needed so excluding bedding we have bought this LO 200$ worth of stuff... We are coming in WAY under budget for the moment :D

  • I don't have a limit..if I love it I'll buy it.  The most expensive thing thus far is a dress I purchased from Janie and Jack.
  • DH wanted to buy a pair of infant William Rast jeans for LO and I nixed that real quick! But when he wanted to buy a $40 Diesel hoodie, I couldn't say no... Stick out tongue I think Daddy will be the one to run to when LO wants something expensive!

I bought a pink onesie for $3 the day we found out it was a girl. I barely spend more than $15 on a shirt for myself, there's no way my kid is going to get $50 outfits. If someone else wants to buy it, fine, but she won't be getting it from me.

  • I have bought some stuff but only from consignment sales so far.  I think the most expensive thing I bought was $6.00 for a white button hoodie and cute matching pants.  I'm going to be getting a ton of handme downs from my SIL and since I haven't gotten them yet I don't want to buy tons of stuff plus I will probably get tons of clothes from my shower.  I did buy this really cute dress (brand new) at a consignment sale for $4.00 that I think is going to be what she wears home from the hospital.
  • Very little. I am getting a ton of "hamidowns" and I'm planning on buying a couple of lots of clothes on Ebay once I find out the sex. I figure I will get a ton of cute clothing at the shower and the rest is utilitarian ;)

  • I am a Money Matters nestie and try to model my finances around the book The Millionaire Next Door. I will have my kid's college tuition fully saved for and my mortgage paid off before she is even old enough to ask for her first pair of designer jeans.  I won't buy any baby clothes that are not from the clearance rack.

There will come a day when she *has* to have that expensive outfit.  Fortunately, it's several years down the road!!

  • I have not spent much on baby cloths yet as we are still awaiting the big u/s. However, I shop at consignment stores and sales, as well as good will and used stores. Most cases you can get "like new" baby clothes name brand too for under $5 an outfit. I got 6 carters onesies for $3 the other day. I don't believe in buying new expensive clothes for the LO that he or she will outgrow in a few months. Heck, I don't buy new clothes for me or DH either.

  • I spend very little on my daughter's clothes (she's almost 2) and I will spend about the same on my little one on the way.  I can usually find full outfits for around 10-12$  Jeans are sometimes more.  If you are constantly checking clearance racks and sales you can get some really cute clothes for really cheap.  I am also a huge fan of outlets like carters and osh kosh, they have amazing end of the season clearances and I love to get p.j.s from those sales!  I am going to be spending enough on clothes for my daughter when she is a teenager!!
  • Some things I can justify spending a good deal on, other things I cant. I know DH really wants LO to have a nice Boston Red Sox outfit, which will probably be her "come home" outfit, so I dont mind spending a lot of money on that. But onesies and things like that, I'm not gonna waste much money on them. hahah I say that now...
  • Wow, I must be cheap!   So far most of what I've purchased has been from children's consignment sales or on sale.  The only full priced items I've picked up were at Baby Gap and the only reason I spurged is b/c I had a 20%off coupon + a giftcard!  Embarrassed
