Austin Babies

what do you do for "snacks"?

I have been doing non-messy things like puffs, mum-mums, fig newtons (ok, those are really effing messy), crackers, rice cakes..  I give it to them while they're playing.  It's not a high chair kind of thing for us.

should I be doing something more, uh, healthy for snacks?  what do you give your kid?  and do you do your snacks in the high chair?

Re: what do you do for "snacks"?

  • The twins used to have a meat, pasta, and a veggie for lunches/dinners and we reserved things like fruit, yogurt, cheese for snacks. Sometimes I would make them sweet potato chips/fries and those would be snacks.

[ETA: yes, it was always in the high chair]

  • Cheese slices, cheese crackers, pudding/yogurt, animal crackers, I like non-messy stuff too! I can't think of too many... I really don't give him any snacks unless he asked to eat. If I do, then he won't eat any meals.

  • We do cheerios, rice cakes, crackers, puffs, yogurt melts, goldfish, dried fruit, yogurt, string cheese, fruit cups (I'll drain the liquid and dump it on the tray), cut up pieces of banana, gerber fruit strips, mum mums, animal crackers, pirates booty, gerber cereal bars, etc.

At home we do snacks either in the high chair or sitting on the counter in the Bumbo (I know this is a 'no no' but we're right there in front of her and she sits up there while I do dishes, etc. At daycare they always have snacks in a highchair.

We just bought some of those snack traps and put some cheerios in it for her to carry around and she has figured out that she can push one of the tab things down and shake it and all the food will go everywhere...the dog loves it.
  • I let her walk around with cereal (Cheerios, Apple Jacks, Kix, whatever) or crackers or pretzels...any kind of dry snack.  She loves fruit but that's always at the table.

ok, your snack ideas are great.  maybe we'll start doing snacks in the high chair.

also, about the snack traps..you had asked on my blog about them and I never responded b/c, well, I forgot, but also, yeah.  That's what the boys do w/ theirs.  Cheerios go EVERYWHERE.  I just had to vacuum their room for the 2nd time this week b/c they carry the snack traps in there and then slam slam slam them on the ground or they both shove their fists into it at the same time and there go the Cheerios.  Sigh.

    thanks y'all!

  • DS just discovered Veggie Straws - I got them at Costco and he LOVES them.  They're really easy to keep in the diaper bag.

Other snacks he likes that are easy to bring along and don't cause too much of a mess: string cheese, Annies Cheddar Bunnies, Whole Wheat Ritz crackers, whole grain cheerios.

I almost bought some veggie straws last week. We'll have to try them.

I forgot to add the Annie's Bunnies..she likes all the flavors.

We LOVE pirates booty.  They sell the white cheddar flavor at Costco - and last week they had a Pirates Booty road show so we got to taste all the flavors.  C loves the veggie flavor!
