Austin Babies

when will she sleep later?

t has been waking up at 430 for like a week straight. we have tried to adjust her bedtime (7), but she just cannot stay awake any later.

when she wakes at 430, we let her stay in her crib until at least 5 or 530, but then she starts crying (for real).  she is WIDE awake and ready to play.

anything we can do differently?  i know we shouldn't complain since she sttn, but 430 is early to play lol

Re: when will she sleep later?

  • Try putting her to bed atleast 15 minutes earlier. DS used to wake up at about 6:15 and then for some reason in december he started waking up at  4:45. I wasnt having it! I called the Pedi and she said to try to put him to bed earlier. I would have never thought of that!  Try in 15 minute increments. Our Pedi said he was probably over tired and over tired babies are restless babies and restless babies do not sleep well. That night we put him to bed 15 minutes earlier and he was sleeping till 6:30 and has been since.

    Good luck!

Ditto this. I am a firm believer in the whole "sleep begets sleep" theory. If you keep her up later, she will be even more tired and less likely to settle easily and get good, restful sleep. Sounds crazy, but its certainly proven true with Camy.

  • 7 seems sooo early already (i know kids sleep more, but how long should i expect her to sleep if she goes to bed earlier?)

when does camy go to sleep? btw: love her new pic!!! but i also loved the one with sunglasses :)

    Thank you! :)

Camy goes down around 8 and sleeps until 8-9am. She will sometimes wake in the middle of the night, but not to feed and she is easy to soothe back to sleep.

I think it would be hard to guess how long she may sleep going to bed earlier as there are a lot of factors that probably play into that: her naps during the day, her food intake during the day, if there is noise/movement in the house in the mornings, her own rhythm, etc. I was just thinking that if you are going to try to adjust her bedtime to help her sleep longer, an earlier bedtime may work better than a later one so that she doesn't get overtired. I'm certainly no expert though. ;)

    don't lie. you totally are.

ETA: to OP--do you know if she's waking to eat? It might be possible to just treat it as a night waking. So, keep lights off, voices low, minimal interaction. Feed her and then try to put her right back down. I know several times during the 4-month wakeful Ali would wake up at 2 or 3 laughing and ready to play. It was so hard to not smile and talk back to her, but we just kept everything low key and we were able to put her back down. GL!

    Dear Bump: You suck.

ditto from me, too. A still goes to bed early (between 6:30-7:00) and will wake between 7:30-8:30.

  • This is exactly what C has been doing as well!  He goes to bed around 7pm and even when we tried to adjust his bedtime it didn't make a difference.  I'm not sure if you did Ferber, but the book mentions that early wakings can be adjusted.

When C was waking at 4:45 we would let him fuss and sometimes he would go back to sleep.  Most of the time, though, he seemed to be up and ready to play.  At first I was ok with it because I was just happy that he was STTN (like you said).  But then we decided to try to adjust the waking time.  We decided that we wouldn't get him until 6am.  So basically, if he woke up before 6am, we would let him fuss.  This only lasted a couple of days.  Now he is waking up around 6:15am.  It's still early compared to other babies, but it's better than 4:45am so we'll take it!  We may try adjusting again eventually since it seems to work!
