how to write a complaint email to the today show?

i don't know if you can view it online if you didn't see it - but their piece this morning on the infantino sling recall had me RAGING.  i get it - if you don't properly position your baby in a peanut style sling and aren't paying attention, baby can suffocate.  great - there are also lots of other ways baby can suffocate from user error or inattentive parents.  however i understand the need to tell people about the recall.

what got me so upset was they continued to show mothers using ergos, and moby wraps in their story calling them slings!!!  they didn't find one real life person to interview wearing an ACTUAL sling carrier!  this is horribly unfair to other baby carriers to call 'all' baby carriers slings.  they even through the bjorn in there when they showed carriers in packaging with brand names later in the piece.

SUCH a bad piece of reporting - i feel like the world needs to inform them of it - not that i expect them to care.

anyone else see it and start raging??

Re: how to write a complaint email to the today show?

  • I didn't see it but I certainly know that people's impressions are that any kind of baby carrier is dangerous.  When the news about the slingriders broke, I got umpteen calls from concerned friends and relatives about my Bjorn.  Articles like this don't help.

Our local paper has been harping on cosleeping deaths, so as a babywearing cosleeping mama, I am apparently the epitome of bad parenting.

If you find a way to contact the show, let me know.  I'd like to throw in my own two cents too.

  • I just watched it, too.  It was so frustrating!  They showed so many baby carriers (even a Baby Bjorn) that are NOT slings in any way.  DH saw it and agreed.  He used our ring sling when DS was little.

  • In what way is an Ergo a sling?  Wow, that's annoying!  Plus, I think they are over hyping the whole thing, and not putting more light on responsible baby wearing.  Grr.  I still plan to use my Hotsling some.

I understand why the Infantino one and similar are being called bad, but to group all slings, much less baby carriers together is horrible.

And if you tweet - put something in your feed about it with @todayshow. They may respond to that faster than an email. This was mine todayshow needs to learn the difference between baby carriers and slings. Irresponsible reporting of a very important CPSC warning.

Lazy producers and fact checkers = poor, irresponsible reporting = very upset me.

  • Thanks for inspiring me.  I just sent my e-mail off to them!

  • Good call on Tweeting the message too!  I shortened mine a bit so I could add #babywearing to it - I hope it catches on!

Someone should actually contact them and alert them of the report. If I can find a feed of the today show report to see for myself, I might do just that.

  • I just watched the segment.  It was annoying that they showed other carriers, but they did clearly state which ones were recalled and I don't think too many people would have found that confusing.  I actually liked the part where they showed how to and how not to carry a baby though I wish more the story had been focused on the fact that it can be done very safely.  I don't know - I can see why it bothers people, but I can't say I was personally outraged.

  • I tweeted!!  Didn't get to see the segment, but I'm sure DH did, and I'll probably hear about it tonight.  I'll have to explain to him AGAIN, the differences between carriers.  ::Sigh::

I do agree with you that they did clearly state which ones were actually recalled, but to the uninformed I do think it kind of gives the impression that ALL baby carriers are slings and dangerous. IMO they shouldn't have shown different types while still referring to slings.

this was my issue - all the specifics on the ACTUAL recall are accurate - however in the piece they showed ONLY examples of other baby carriers that are NOT slings - and then went as far to show packages with brand names of non-sling carriers.  when they showed the dangerous ways to have a baby in a sling they showed drawings of what dangerous vs proper positioning in an actual sling should look like - they never even showed an actual ring carrier.

i agree that people need to be careful and that honestly anything can be dangerous when not properly used or supervised.  but i despise sloppy news reporting and i LOVE my EFFers for joining forces to let NBC know they totally are lame for this!  i totally hope that moby and ergo and even bjorn join forces too and make them give a statement on a later episode this week clarifying that their baby carriers are not slings and have nothing to do with with this recall and safety concern.

    YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
