GD - Help. I think I may be an idiot.

So today was the day for my class, and I went and learned all I needed to learn and went on my merry way.  I had not known what to prepare to eat exactly for lunch and such, so I just picked up a salad from Chick-fila (yes, the chicken strips one which is not the grilled, but still) and I ate it and checked my numbers 2 hours later as directed...and the number was 109, which is fine.  It's supposed to be under 120.

Had a snack, which was provided by the class...graham crackers and peanut butter in the afternoon.

So, tonight.  Once again, I had a salad, this time I made it myself.  Lettuce (perfectly fine - can have all I want), 2% cheese (shredded, 1 carb), a few small tomatoes (like 4-5 tiny ones), and 2 chopped up chicken tenders from publix (I know I need to get away from the chicken tenders, and I will, but it was only 2) and oil and vinegar dressing with 2 carbs (measured out, 2 tbsp).   And my two hour number was 121.

I am supposedly allowed something like 60 carbs at dinner, and I know it was no where NEAR that, and I was still 121.

What is the deal?

  • it is frustrating.  next time try grilled.  do something active after dinner for 10 min and that should help also.

  • I make salads like that at home a lot, but I don't do the tomatoes and my salad dressing is low fat.  I can do breaded chicken just fine as long as I have enough protein to offset the breading on the chicken.  It doesn't seem like that meal would put you over though.

    Exercise might have helped.

  • 121 is still not bad. I wouldnt stress over 121 at all. Numbers should be idealy between 80 and 120 but my midwife today just said that a few numbers here and there wont hurt a thing.
  • It is frustrating.  My numbers are bad after dinner if I dont take a 15-20 minute walk.  Might try that.....

  • Did you wash your hands well before you tested?  That could be it.

Or it could be your dressing- not the numbers but how your body is responding to it.  I have definitely heard of people who just react to tomatoes.  I have not had this problem, but every body is different in its reactions.

It might also be that you just didn't have enough protein to balance everything else out.  2 chicken tenders and a little cheese is definitely not enough according to my diet (and most others I've seen posted on here).  I do know the key is balance more than low carb.

Your meal sounds fine.  I wouldn't stress.  There are SO many factors that can affect your numbers, and one 121 will not ruin you or put you on meds.  Take a deep breath and try again tomorrow.

  • It's even more frustrating because I can't exercise at all - am on modified bed rest...
  • Not what you want to hear but it could just be that your body is more insulin resistant in the evening.  And after hearing that you are on bedrest, perhaps the activity in the morning helped offset your lunch but because you were less active around dinner it didn't.
  • Just because they say 60g it doesn't mean that you can actually eat that much. Before I was on insulin for dinner I could only eat about 15g carbs for dinner. It sucked. I have always been well below the normal limits for a gestational diabetes diet. It is trial and error and it will get easier!
