If you have tattoos... Please come in!!!

How do you feel about LO getting tatted?  I LOVE tattoos.  I have six and DH has two and we just had a dispute about LO getting tattoos.  He thinks that it would be hippocritical (sp?) to tell LO that she can't get tattoos.  I would have no objections to her getting tattoos once she is 18 (like I did) but I just can't see signing for my 15 yo to get some stupid tattoo on her hand or something.  Maybe I'm a little sensitive because I work at a high school and when I see a teenage girl with her boyfriend's name going around her wrist I cringe.

Re: If you have tattoos... Please come in!!!

  • I only have 1, but was planning on getting another when I found out I was pregnant. With that said, I obviously don't see anything wrong with tattoos, but am definitely gonna make my LO wait until they're 18 to get one. If I had gotten a tattoo at 15, I can't even imagine what I would have chosen..

  • we feel the same way . . i don't mind that she gets one or more . . but I would rather wait until she was over 18 like i did.
  • I have a tat that I got at 18 and I regret it!  I like tats but NO WAY would I let LO get one before she turns 18!  DF has one to but I'm sure he won't let LO get one either because he wants her to wait til she's 13 just to get her ears peirced!  I want her to get them done as soon as she asks Stick out tongue

  • My kid can do as they please. However they must be 19 and they will be paying for it themselves. Also it better mean something, I will give a speech on not getting a tattoo cause its a cool thing to do, but getting one cause it has some sort of meaing.

This is exactly why she will be waiting until she is 18. Although her uncle does tattoos for a living so I am worried about what that might mean.

  • I was 22.  I'm making her wait until she's at least 18.

  • I have 2.  H is completely against the idea of tattoos and body piercings.  I also didn't get mine until after I had turned 18.  So to me it isn't hypocritical to require my child to have to wait till they can sign for themselves (ie 18) to get tattoos.

H and I are still under discussion about piercing a little girl's ears.

  • I have one, and it's pretty small and not in an obvious place. DH doesn't have any but wants one. I won't care if LO gets one after he's 18. I had to wait until I was 18 to get mine and was old enough to decide for myself what I would be happy with on my body for the rest of my life. As long as it's something meaningful to him and something he will be happy with, he can do what he wants.

  • I am okay with LO getting tattoos or piercings.  I have 2 tattoos and DH had several piercings before he started teaching.  My dad got me my first one at 17, but he made me think about it for one year before I got it.  I think that I would probably handle the situation the same way if it were my child.

ETA: The tattoo my dad signed for is small and easily covered. I don't think that he would have ok'd something ridiculous nor would I.  After LO turns 18 there obviously isn't too much DH and I can do...

  • I have to agree with you.  I am not going to sign for my daughter to get a tattoo either.  My husband and I both had to wait to turn 18 to get them and she can wait too.  My parents signed for my little sister to get a tattoo when she was only 16 and she chose to get cherries on her thigh.  Seriously.  I know the extra two years won't make that much difference, but hopefully making her wait will help guarantee that she get something a little more meaningful placed permanently on her body.
  • I have one, and while I don't regret it, if I could do it all over again I wouldn't have gotten it. It's really pretty and I get comments from people all the time about how they love it, but I'm more of a natural person now.

We'd probably tell our kid that if he wants to get one, he has to wait until he's out of our house and supporting himself. That way he can make his own decision, but decision time will come when he's older and more mature (this is me assuming he wouldn't be able to support himself at 18 years old and would probably still be at home).

  • I only have a small one that is the chinese symbol for the year we got married.  I would hope that LO would only get tattoos if they have meaning. But...it wouldn't be the end of the world if she didn't

  • I have 2 and The way I feel is once she turns 18 she can choose to do whatever she wants to do with her body. But until then I will have the say so.

  • I have a ton of tats and there is no way I would sign for any kid under 18. I will even try to make them wait longer. I actually think 18 is too young to make a life long decision.  I know for myself that what I was into at 18 sure isnt what im into now!
  • i have 2. DH has 3. We'd both like a couple more eventually. I waited till i was 18 and so will LO <3

  • I have 4 tattoos with more to come & DH has none but plans on getting inked once I go for another one. We both agree that we won't tell our daughter NO WAY to tattoos. If she comes to us at 16 or 17 wanting one, our response will be that once she's 18 if she still wants that same design, then we will take her for it so we know the tattoo place is a good one. I also would like input on the location of the tattoo ( all 4 of mine are in places that can be covered up & none of them were visible on my wedding day). Believe it or not, we are against piercings like tongue & belly rings but ok with tattoos.

  • I have 6 and my husband has 2 and a half-sleeve. I waited until I was 18 and so did he. Our LO will wait until he's 18 to get one as well!!

  • Ditto everyone else. I have a tattoo, which I like and don't regret - but I got it when I was 19 and I wouldn't allow tattoos until LO was 18.

  • I have two and DH has one. Our LO will wait until she's at least 18. I was 18 when I got my first and I'm wanting to cover it up soon. I love my second one, but not sure what I was thinking on the first ...
  • I was about to get my first tattoo when I found out I was pregnant. So after LO arrives, I'll be getting it. But I agree with most of the pps, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed or disapprove if the lo gets a tattoo. I would hope that it will be something meaningful, but it's not my body and not my decision. I won't allow it before 18, however.

  • For me I'm gonna give LO the same rule my parents gave me...He can get a tattoo if he's had the same style (same tattoo) in mind for at least a year! I thought it was so lame when I was younger, but I realized at that young of an age I couldn't stop changing my mind over and over soooo I didn't get my first tattoo till I was 19. The rule totally makes sense now.

A girl I went to college with got one when she was 15 and it was a freaking ice cream cone.  Why didn't her mom tell her that wasn't a good idea, IDK, bu that is the type of tattoos that 15 yo get.

  • Once she's 18, it's fair game what she does to her body. I will encourage her to get something meaningful, however. I picked out all four of my tattoos because they were "pretty", and all before the age of 20. If I had to do it again, I would put a little more thought into the designs.

  • i've got 10 and SO is completely covered...

although he didn't wait til he was 18, I had to, so she will too..

one of my best friends got a tattoo at 14, and it was a grateful dead bear.. she's almost 23 now and regrets it totally..

I don't have one tattoo that I regret because they all have meaning. i hope to instill that in her before she turns 18 so that when she decides on something to get (if anything at all) it will be something she will never regret. :)

  • 18, and the tattoo has to have significance. Same for both of them.

If Elena wants a butterfly tattoo just to get a butterfly tattoo, then no. This is permanent. I waited and thought long and hard about each tattoo I have.

  • I have two (one on my back and one on the top of my foot) and DH doesn't have any- he isn't against them, it is just not his thing.  I got my first one when I was 17, and while I don't "regret" it, it is a sun, and I don't think it is something I would get today.  The one on the top of my foot is only 3 years old and I love it.  I would definitely want DD to wait until she is 18 to get one.

  • I got my first tattoo when I was 16 and I do not regret it.  There are a few I got after I was 18 that I could have put a little more thought into but oh well, can't change it now (they are all "hidden") As for LO, I'd like him to wait until he is 18 to get a tattoo, but I know how teenagers are, and If he has his mind set on something, I'd rather him get it done in a clean environment by a professional with my permission than getting it done by some guy who does it out of his trailer with a home made gun (like my DH's first tattoo at 16 without parents permission)
  • I have three and plan on getting another one after LO is weaned. I have zero problem with my kids getting tats, but they'll have to wait until they can legally do it themselves.
  • I dont have a tattoo but was going to get one right before I found out I was pregnant as well. I still plan on getting one but I have recently changed it to something more meaningful to me (my sons footprint and birth date). I will for sure be telling my son he is to wait til he is 18 and if he wants one when he's 17 wait til his 18th birthday if its still the same design I will buy it for him for his birthday... but I get some say so in the tattoo, and the placement (especially for any daughters that may come in the future).
  • I have one and would love to get another at some point.  My parents made me wait until I was old enough and could pay for it on my own, and that is what I will do.  I also was told once I decided what I wanted, to wait a year and see if I still wnated it.  I waited two to be certain and haven't regretted it ever.  I want another but everytime I decide, I have hesitations a few months later.  My DH doesn't have any and never will, but he does like the one I have.  He agrees with our kids waiting and making sure that it is what they want before they get it.

  • I have three with more planned. DH doesn't have any. He doesn't get my love for them. Lol. LO can get a tattoo when she's 18 and that's all. I waited til I was 18. So will she.
  • i have 6 but they are generally hidden except one on calf, and my husband has a lot (some might say "covered" but not really!). He is convinced that our son will hate tattoos because by the time he is 15 ours will probably not look very good! Only time will tell, but definitely he will have to wait until he's 18 and its legal. Both my husband and I think our worst tattoos are the first ones we got (nothing too terrible), so it will be easy to show proof of the importance of waiting!
