Have we had a HC bill discussion yet?

Who's on the bandwagon for the healthcare bill that just passed?

I'm personally in favor of the bill, I know it's not perfect, but it feels like a step in the right direction...

For or Against?

I'm sort of in the middle, but I'm teetering towards being against it. DH and I are both doctors (we're finishing our residencies, so we're just starting out). And while I think that everyone should have healthcare, as doctors we'll be getting screwed by some parts of this bill. You don't want to know how much student loan debt we have from putting ourselves through medical school. This bill will reduce our compensation in the future for billing, and will result in us taking longer to pay our loans...and paying back double what we took out due to interest.

  • For. But I'm sure there are things that will need to be fixed. I still feel going in the right direction is better than doing nothing. JMO though. Obama is going to be speaking about it not to far from us on Thursday. Crossing our fingers we get picked to get tickets!

Against- there are issues with the current system but this wasn't the right way to fix the problems.

  • Against.  Reform is definitely needed, but this bill is not the way to do it.  Oh well, November cometh . . .

I'm not happy with several items on the bill, but something needed to be done. My family (dad, uncles, grandfather before he died, and 2 cousins) are all doctors, and all supported the health care bill.  My father is even an elected official and was out campaigning for it, and he is a registered republican.

I think something needed to be done and it is high time that the ball is rolling.  Medicare didn't start out smoothly either, and in nearly didn't pass with as many republicans voting for and against it.  But today if anyone tried to take medicare away there would be a line of old people with rolling pins and walkers ready to beat you senseless.

It is a process that will evolve.

  • Against! I am all for having some regulations for insurance companies, where they can't just deny people with preexisting conditions. I am against because in order to have the tax money to pay for it you have to take money from people who earned that money. I don't think it is fair to take money from the more wealthy to give something to the poor. Many wealthier people have the money they have due to their hard work. As some have said where will the motivation be to become a doctor and take out tons of loans when you won't be able to make as much to support your family and pay off all the loans along with malpractice insurance? We are middle class and work hard for what we earn. I just wish there was a way to regulate it more. I understand helping those who work hard but don't make much money. I'm not for giving this to those who live off welfare and don't work. Some people have stated you are already required by law to have car insurance. True, but taxpayers dollars do not help anyone pay for this.
  • right now i am for it. but i admit i dont know all of the ins and outs of the bill.

heres a thought: we are one of the only, if not the only country that does not offer universal health care.

I'm guessing that you mean one of the only, if not the only INDUSTRIALIZED country that does not offer universal healthcare... right?

There have to be less expensive solutions to get us going in the right direction....like allowing insurance companies to sell health insurance across state lines to increase competition and lower costs to consumers. Tort reform to stop allowing frivolous malpractice lawsuits - right now physicians are required to have malpractice insurance which is very expensive for them, so they have to pass the the costs on to their patients. Incentivize health care facilities to open urgent care centers, so people without insurance or with high deductibles can get help for a flat low cost fee. It would cost far less to the hospitals than forcing people to come to the ER for a sore throat or ear infection, which is what happens today...etc., etc.

I'm sure there are millions of other low cost ideas that could get us to a better healthcare system without a complete overhaul. I look at the success of Medicaid, Medicare, etc. (sarcasm) and definitely don't want the gov't making choices for me or my family when it comes to my health.

  • Against! It screws people like my DH and I over. I don't deny that there is something wrong with our health care system! I mean we are one of the only countries that makes a profit off peoples health, but this bill is hardly the answer!
  • Completely against!

  • totally against. government being this involved in healthcare can only lead to problems. If they can't get medicaid and medicare on track why do people think that the government having more control over health care will be beneficial?? I just don't get it.  this is going to be a costly venture and a major step in the wrong direction.

As a military spouse, I can tell you, this is NOT what you want.

Medicare's being bled dry by people who have settled insurance claims and then double dip into Medicare.  For example, Bob has a work comp injury for his right shoulder, he settles his claim for $50,000.  He spends that money on a speed boat and then files for Medicare coverage for his future right shoulder medical treatment.  That $50,000 was for the future care of his right shoulder.  He abused that settlement by buying a speed boat...  and now Medicare is paying out the $50,000 for his future care.  This is the primary reason that Medicare has been going down the cr@pper for awhile now.  There is regulation on its way, but the gov't keeps pushing back the start date - what was 7/1/09, was then 4/1/10, is now 1/1/11...  you see the pattern here?

Right, but this universal health care will not eliminate my UnitedHealthcare insurance, nor will it get rid of Cigna, BCBS, Kaiser, etc.  It will only add a gov't brand of health care to the market.  If you don't want change, you don't have to change.

  • FOR!!!!!

But I am against the fact that there was no public option. I cannot understand why people keep referring to the cost-we already pay for every single uninsured person. Everytime someone goes to the hospital with the damn flu b/c they have no health insurance, taking up time in the ER from people with life/death scenarios and then our premiums go up and up and up to cover their expenses! Get educated and stop listening to what pundits tell you to think. We are the only developed nation without healthcare. Its not socialist or communist- its a basic human right. But i guess, when they started Medicaid/Medicare and Social Security there was TONS of push back and now listen to these little old people-they would be done without medicare and social security.

*praying people will see the light but still respecting peoples opinions.

  • Uh, nope, this bill does not include a public option.

Like everything in life, this is a trade-off, there will absolutely be some negative consequenses and undoubtedly some positive results...much like the current health care system, some quite clear benefits and some very real problems.
