Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Have you taken LO to the theatre yet?

DD is 8 months and I would really like to be able to go to the theatre to watch a movie and not have to get a sitter. I know that pre-baby I was always annoyed when someone brought a baby to the theatre because they were distracting, but not only that, maybe the theatre is a bit too loud for them? When did you/will you start taking LO to the theatre?

With my first LO I took him right away and never stopped he was alway well behaved in the theatre, this one im I havent at all yet, he has this shreik that would deafen you, so I dont want to risk it!

  • I have never even taken my 2.5 yr old.

I would say that if you want to take her there is a small window where they are young enough to sleep the whole time, before they get too alert and will get bored.

I, personally, want to relax and enjoy a movie do we mostly enjoy movies in our living room once LO's are in bed, and do date nights where we go do something that we can interract more.  But neither of us have ever been big movie people.

  • We will not be taking DD to the theater for a while. It's too loud and she is at an age where she likes to move around. The bright lights...it's just not fair to my DD. That's just my opinion.
  • I'm not interested in ever attempting to try.  When he's old enough, I'll take him to watch.

ETA: lol at "attempting to try."  A little redundant.

  • no way in hell will I be attempting that for a long while.   Netflix is my friend.

  • I'll take him when he's old enough to enjoy the movie himself.  Otherwise, it's both too loud for him and disrespectful to people who have paid to enjoy a movie not the shrieks of my pterodactyl.
  • We have this really great program at two movie theaters in my city in Canada but I am pretty certain the US has them too.  It is called Movies for Mommies.  Google it and check it out.  It is AWESOME!

DD and I have gone to a couple of the movies.  They are twice a week and always new movies.  They turn down the volume of the movie a little and turn the lights up a bit brighter.  We all park our strollers at the front of the theater and they have a change table at the back with diapers, wipes, bottle warmers, etc.  If a baby cries you kind of just zone them out and for the most part, the babies are great during the movies.

Hopefully you have this near you!

This. I go to the movies to watch movies, not my son. If I wanted to pay $10 to stand in a lobby with a fussy, bored baby ... well, I guess then I'd take him. I'd rather let MIL watch him, or wait until it's on DVD and we can watch at home with the pause button.

  • does your theatre chain have a "mommy matinee" program?  we've been taking ds since he was 3 weeks old.  usually they only dim the lights and turn down the volume a bit and are meant for moms (and dads) to be able to see first run movies without having to wait for dvd.  at our theatre, it's the first showing of any movie every tuesday.

  • There is a Mommy Movie thing at a theater in this area. The lights are left up, the sound is turned down and the babies/kids are free to make noise, climb around ect. Honestly? That sounds like hell to me. There is no movie I want to see bad enough that I can't wait to get a sitter and enjoy a few hours out baby-free.

  • I have never been interested in taking any of my kids at an early age.  I would rather wait until I can go kid free or get the DVD.  This LO would never sit through a whole movie, all she wants to do is crawl around.  My oldest was in kindergarten her first time at the movies and my second hasn't gone yet, she is in kindergarten.  They will go soon on a daddy daughter date now that we have a real theater around, not the 1 movie at a time one in Germany lol.
  • I do not think that most pre-school age and younger children belong in a movie theater?unless, perhaps, it's one of those "mommy/baby" times that some theaters have (usually a weekday and the 1st showing).

I HATE when there are crying or fussy babies when I'm seeing a movie.  And now that I'm a mom, when I FINALLY make it to a movie IN the theaters, I want to be able to enjoy the movie.  I won't inflict my son, who is not terribly fussy but is still a baby, on others and I hope others do the same.

And I don't understand how people take small children/babies to movies with graphic violence and sexual situations. It makes no sense to me.
