Conflicted about bumpers

I have been staunchly anti-bumper until now, but DD moves around in her sleep a lot. She has woken herself up a few times recently bumping into the side of the crib, which is obviously annoying. I still worry about the possibility of her smothering herself, though. She sleeps on her stomach periodically, so I suppose she won't smother herself, but I'm still nervous.

Thoughts?

Re: Conflicted about bumpers

  • I am in the same boat and very interested to hear opinions.  I am going to wait until he is able to roll both ways before I consider it.  But I do notice that he is always putting his feet or arms in between the slats.  I know I can go with the breathable one, but that still won't protect from bumps.

  • You could always try a breathable one and if that's not cushy enough move up to a real one.

I actually went to put ours in this weekend and realized what a PITA it would make changing the sheets. I think C could do without it, but I think it's so cute and hate that it's been living in the closet! I'm conflicted and it has nothing to do with the safety of my child, oops Tongue Tied.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • We have the breathable one on DD's crib and while it is not cushy enough to make a difference on the bumps its great for not getting her arms and legs stuck in the railings...and honestly, she is either a really tough kid or the bumps don't seem to bother her.  Rarely will it wake her up when she bumps into them.

ditto, we've had this from the beginning and really like it. also, it's pretty easy to take sheets on and off with it in there.

Same. We did try taking it off at 6 months and the FIRST night, we walked in and she was sleeping with both of her legs hanging out of the crib. That scared me more than the threat of a head bump here or there. We still have it on and probably will leave it on indefinitely.

  • We have the bumpers in LOs crib.  There are pretty firm.  Soft enough to cushion him from the occasional bump, but they are really, REALLY firm - like they have little to no padding in them at all.  Maybe you can find something similar.

  • I have used the traditional comforter-type bumpers from Day One and Allie is all over the place when she sleeps in there.  If I didn't have the bumper in there she would be hitting her head all the time. Just make sure you get one that is snugly in place.  I had one that didn't stay in place and her arms and legs would always end up under it through the slats.

  • We also have had them in there since day one.  My LO has never tried to squish her face up against them, but she does move around a ton and they keep her from getting her limbs stuck between the slats.  I've read that once your LO is big enough to move around/move head easily, they shouldn't be able to smother themselves because their body will fight to breathe and they'll just move.  But, they do make it a huge PITA to change the sheets!

We'll probably take ours out once the LO can stand in the crib so she can't climb on them.

  • As long as she is strong enough to move herself around and push up/away from the bumper, it should be fine.  I actually started using a bumper at 9 months because we were (unsuccessfully) trying to sleep train and she would half fall asleep sitting up - as she refused to just lie down - and would keel over in the wood.  She doesn't try to stand on it (and it would collapse under her weight anyway), so we still use it.
  • I've been using ours since BabyCrown was moving around, about six months or so.  As long as your baby can move his/her head on her own, they'll be fine.  We have the comforter-type one and when he tries to climb on it, it just squishes down so it won't help him escape.  Right now he thinks it's hilarious to push it down and then have it spring back.  Bonus, five extra minutes of sleep for me!
  • we also used ours from the very beginning. at your LO's age, it's not really a suffocation issue IMO. Ours are also soft enough where they collapse if DD tries to stand on them. But our crib is now on the lower setting (has been for a long time). DD is 17mo old and we still have the bumpers. We plan to move her to a queen size bed w/n the month (due to baby #2) and don't plan to remove the bumpers in the meantime.
  • We have soft comforter style ones on ours from PB since day 1.  I put them on before DD came cause they looked pretty, and when DD transitioned to the crib around 6 weeks, I left them there since she was so squirmy.  They are easy to change the sheet around btw, the little ties hold them in place and don't interfere much with the process.
  • Changing the sheets is already such a pain, I don't think the bumpers make it much worse. I can't quite remember when I put ours on, somewhere around 9 months I think. I originally wanted the mesh ones, but the only color I could get was pink, and I just didn't want to put pink bumpers on my baby boy's crib. So I went with the regular cushy ones, and he's done fine. Before we put them on he was getting arms and legs stuck, and hitting his head a lot, so they've really helped with that. They are soft enough they just collapse when he stands on them.
