If you believe in "the war", which war are you referring to and have you personally been touched by it? What does "believing in the war" and "supporting our troops" mean to you?
ewww this post could get messy. I have been personally touched by it as my DH has deployed to Iraq and will deploy again to Afghanastan . Do I believe in the war? I believe that there is a reason we are there yes. Have we been there too long...yes. Only going by what my DH has told me we can not just withdraw all our troops. Everything we have done over the years will have been completely useless. The troops are making change over there wether or not the news wants to show that. Leaving completly could be a disaster for the middle east and for the United States.
SO I guess my answer is Yes I do believe in the war. I believe in supporting what our troops are fighting for. How are they supposed to leave thier families and fight a war when they don't have the support of the American people, the people they are fighting for. Please don't flame me...just answering the question!

No flames. FWIW, people refer to "the war" - but there are two. One in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. They're two separate conflicts - OEF (Afghanistan) and OIF (Iraq). My husband has deployed twice to Iraq(he's out of the Army now).
I just notice a lot of people (IRL just as much if not more than on here) that say, "I support the war" or "I support the troops" and I wonder if all of them have a personal experience with either or if it's just something they say. And if they mean it or why they mean it.
My personal opinion is that Afghanistan was justified. I don't think we really thought through how difficult it would be and I don't think enough attention was paid in the beginning to how much good humanitarian aid to the Afghani people would have done (in addition to fighting the Taliban). The Iraq war is difficult for me. I don't know whether I believe it was justified from the beginning but I agree with you in that we can't leave now. I struggle with it though. I know DH talks about how much good was done in the northern part of the country the first time he was there at the beginning and I believe that good work was done. But he was so discouraged during the second deployment - I don't know, it's just something I struggle with. I do believe that our troops are doing the best they can and that a lot of good has come out of both conficts. I support them. And I hope your husband comes home safely.
I am not going to go into my full thoughts on the war. I agree, this post can get messy.
Yes, I have been personally touched by it. My husband was deployed for 15 months then was home for a year and left for another 12 months when I was 13 weeks pregnant. He missed the birth and 6 months of her life. I also lost a great friend (one of my closest friends' husband) Christmas Day 2006.
Like PP said, my husband has also talked about how you cannot just pull all of the troops out at once. Towards the end of his last deployment he did see changes though. The Americans are not doing as much as they were. The Iraqis are doing more on their own now.

Please tell your DH thank you! He is a hero, seriously. And thank you to you and your daughter as well for allowing him to go over there.
I agree with you. I think we should have gone over to both Iraq and Afghanistan. I do think that the war has been mismanaged though. I do not believe in pulling out all of the troops at once though. Look back at Vietnam. When the U.S. pulled out their troops, the communists took over soon after and Vietnam has not been the same since.
I do believe that we are still needed in Afghanistan. I believe that we do have a responsibility to rid the world of terrorists. Sure, not everyone will agree with how we go about accomplishing that goal, but it has to be done. And I wholeheartedly support our troops who put their own lives in danger in order to bring about these goals.
Again, comparing it to Vietnam, the Viet-Cong and the rest of the North Vietnamese used the U.S.' opposition to their advantage.
I do not want to have another 9/11, and I believe that we need to keep our country and ones who are against terrorism safe from attacks.
