moms of boys, when did you potty train?

my mom says she had my sister and I potty trained before we turned 2.  On my MoMs board, one chick has 2.5 year old triplets and she says she's not about to start PT them any time soon, so I'm wondering what's the median age for PT?  I would love to do away with diapers in the next year, but is that a pipe dream?

Re: moms of boys, when did you potty train?

  • DS started potty training at preschool at age 2.5. He's 3 now and pretty much potty trained as far as peeing goes, but he won't poop on the potty yet. Still working on that one. Boys take longer to potty train.

  • My BFF has two girls (I know, not what you asked for).  Her first was pretty much potty trained ~3 mos. before she turned 2.  Her second could care less if she wore a dirty diaper all day long, and it took a LOT longer for her (not sure on the exact age, but well after 2).

I think it depends on the kid.  One might be interested earlier, one might resist.  I know right now there's no way in the world I could even attempt to potty train Luke.  I'd love to have it done by 2, but I'm gonna try to roll with it.

    NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

That's not good news.  Suck.  :(

  • I started with Colton around 2.5 and he was potty trained (fully) by 34 months.  He still has occasional accidents here and there, but it's pretty nice.  I also consider myself pretty lucky with the potty training process.  He took to my MIL, who he adores, potty training him easier than with me.  She was able to watch him a few days in a row for me and after a few attempts, that one finally worked.  BTW, we never did pull-ups, just straight to underwear.

We're working on it now with DD at almost 34 months.  We made the switch to underwear and it's finally starting to click.  I've always hear boys are harder to PT, but DD simply wasn't ready before now.
  • well.... Jake turned 3 in late January and we are STILL working on it.  I had high expectations in the beginning but now I've just realized that he will do it when he is ready.

All the girls in Jake's MDO class have been pt'ed for months now.  Every single boy in the class is still working on it.

  • my oldest PT'd over 3. started at 3 and took about 3-4 mos. like lrb, he did it when he was ready and there was no forcing it, and he wouldn't take bribes either. I *should* be starting my 2 yo now, he at least is interested in it (which my oldest had no interest whatsoever and didn't care about being in a wet/dirty diaper), but I'm in no hurry. i go by the old saying for PT boys...'start at 2 end at 3, start at 3 end at 3'. :)

    ?

eta: my mom had 3 girls and said we were all pt'd before 2 too. she keeps telling me i'm missing the windows. maybe i am, but it did work out eventually :)?

  • Mine has been interested in potty time for a while now. He loves to follow me/us to the b-room so we got him a potty a few months ago (maybe 18 or so) he used it for his stuffed animals to go potty. I only have the one so it's not so much to clean up after with naked booty time.

He just hit 2 and occasionally just takes his diaper off and goes potty. He'll sit on the potty when I ask him to, but i'm not sure he's got the connection between the feeling of it coming and going to the potty.

He asks to go ont he potty sometimes when we are out. I don't see being done any time soon.

My mom told me I was potty trained before i was 2, but whatever ;)

I know this is what the old wives' tale is but I do not believe it.  Abby was not potty trained until almost 3.  She is stubborn and did not want to before then so she did not and I did not and would not fight her over potty traning.  We went with the she will when she is ready theory.  However a good friend of ours 2nd kid BOY was potty trained at ~2.  They did not do anything really but follow his lead.

  • Jakob had turned 3 in Feb and he wasn't potty trained until April.

My nephew has been potty trained since 2.5.

I have no intention on started Layna until she's 3.  Unless she shows major signs.

  • DS is pretty much potty trained at 32 months old. We bought him a potty when he turned 2 and occasionally helped him sit on it. Mostly we read books about the potty and made a funny game out of every time I had to use the potty. (we'd do a silly run to the potty just like Elmo did). He totally lost interest. But then, out of nowhere he decided he didn't like having dirty diapers anymore. He asked me to change them immediately. We reintroduced the potty as an option and he went for it. I did almost nothing except cheer for him. He just decided he was ready. Of course he could always regress.

  • Jack turns three at the end of May and it's totally hit or miss (no pun intended).  He likes going pee (he gets to pee on a green Apple Jack- it has to be green), but won't go poop if you paid him in bananas.

This is awesome. Must remember the apple jacks for Leo ;)

I really don't see Leo potty training any time in the remotely near future. He could not care less about being clean. I have no intention of even trying until either a) he really is showing major signs of readiness, or b) the kindergarten teacher makes me, whichever comes first Stick out tongue

  • Ty was potty trained by his second birthday. Taryn was 3+. We haven't started with Teagan yet because he's not showing all the signs (major ones anyway) of being ready.

Agreed.  I potty trained my youngest brother when he was 22 months with absolutely no problems.  But, he was definitely ready and probably had been for about a month prior.  Don't buy into the old wives tale of boys being harder/later to potty train.  It'll be interesting to see if your two guys have totally different timetables for potty training--like a science experiment or something.  Wink
