Two weeks ago I tried to give DS some rice cereal and he was SO not interested. Last week I tried again, and he kind of ate it. I tried again tonight and again, he kind of ate it, but kind of spit it out....he was actually smiling and laughing the whole time I was feeding him so he couldn't even keep it in his mouth! I really want him to start eating because I think it will help with his sleeping (that's a whole 'nother post). So if you wouldn't mind can you tell me about how your first feedings went? How soon before you mixed the rice cereal with a little fruit?

Re: Talk to me about starting baby on food
I tried rice cereal first and Stella didn't seem to care for it. I tried some veggies a couple weeks later and she went crazy! I think she just didn't really like how plain the rice cereal was. She only gets the rice cereal mixed with fruit for breakfast.
I'd give veggies a try and see what he thinks about those.
We started Henry about a week shy of six months old--he was totally ready, but it still took him a few feedings to get the hang of it. At first he acted like he didn't really know what to do with it.
We only gave him rice cereal alone for a couple of days and then started mixing it with fruit and veggies. Now he gets baby oatmeal with fruit for breakfast, a fruit and a veggie for lunch, then a veggie mixed w/rice cereal and a fruit for dinner. Just starting this week we've mixed it up and given him yogurt at a couple of meals (which he LOVES), and sometimes instead of a fruit or veggie at lunch I'll dice up some avocado or sweet potato and feed that to him. We also occasionally give him bites of food off our plates if we're having something simple we think he would like.
We started out following the four-day rule, but abandoned that after a couple of weeks. Now it's pretty much anything goes. Yesterday I fed him hummus. Today he had some of the carrots from our pot roast.
I think if you start out simple with cereal and purees then you'll find your own way. Pretty much everyone I know has gone about it in a different way.
