We have a one story house, so we rarely have the chance to "try" stairs. We just returned from a weekend in Houston at my parents' house. They have a 2-story and we have always blocked off the entrances to the foyer where the stairs are.
It just occurred to me though, that maybe I should start trying to teach DD how to go up and down stairs. She's been walking since October - and while she's still no expert, she's definitely trying more challenging things all the time - like going up and down the one step on our patio, etc. Of course we'd take it slow - having someone help her all the way up and down the stairs for a WHILE - like at least a year or 2, right?
I know there are several toddler moms on this board that have 2-stories, so how/when did you start teaching them about this?
Re: let's discuss: toddlers and stairs...
We have a 2-story and started working on stairs with DS when he was about 14 months (he started walking at 11-12 months). I was pregnant and knew I wanted him to go up and down stairs on his own (with me close behind, obviously) before I hit the 3rd tri.
He's a champ at it now and can walk up and down using the railing. I feel really comfortable with him doing stairs with an adult supervising.

We just started letting him go up a few weeks ago and he's already a pro! Now just to get him to walk down instead of sliding down
I would just let her try it. If she's been walking well for awhile she's probably ready to start learning.
We didn't really teach DD about stairs. She'd wriggle out of our arms and want to crawl up the stairs. Lately, she wants to walk (she's 13 months and has been walking since 11 1/2 months). She grabs the rails and steps up sideways (facing the rails). We are always right next to her so she doesn't fall. It's quite cute. More recently, she likes to hold our hands and walk up or down the steps. She definitely wants to be a big girl.
I say go for it. Let her explore and see what she does. Just be there to catch her.
