PG SIL is in the hospital

My SIL who is pg with twins is in the hospital today, and likely will be there for a while.  She's only 28 weeks and her cervix is effaced quite a bit.  They're not sure if they are going to let her do bed rest or if she'll have to stay.  They are doing some test on her to see if she could deliver in the next 2 weeks.  Once they get the results they'll decide what to do.

I just saw her on Sat, and she was telling me as long as she makes it past 33weeks (b/c her oldest's birthday is in April..she wants his birthday to at least be at least 1 week apart from the twins') she is ready to have them and be done.

Can someone shed some light on this?  What is the test they are doing to see "if she could deliver in the next 2 weeks?"  I've never heard of it before.  And what is the typical carrying time for twins?  I know going full term is rare, but I kinda flinched at her "anytime after 33wks is good for me,"  but I've never carried twins, so I dont know if that's "good" or not. Either way,  please send some T&P to her and her babies. This is obviously not ideal for them.

  • If you want more people to weigh in on this I would visit the multiple board, but here is what I know (ish - I am a newbie at this multiples thing, so I could get something wrong!)

The test I think they are talking about is called Fetal Fibronectin test. I linked an explanation.

As far as the normal carrying time, I think the average is 35-36 weeks? However the goal for MoMs is usually the longer the better. Premature babies are obviously more at risk for NICU time and issues. My goal is 36 weeks at least. 37 weeks would be better. And 38 weeks is the time where most OBs would want to deliver twins.

So I would think that no, 33 weeks would really be a good goal. Because I want whatever brings me healthy babies!

  • I don't know the name of the test, but my OB did it every time I went in after about mid-pregnancy on.  I also had steroid shots as a precaution for their lungs.

I delivered at 37 weeks, which is considered full term for twins.

She probably made a flip comment because of facing a long time of bedrest at the hospital.  The pp is correct though that the longer she can keep them in, the better for the twins.

Interesting.  I'd never heard of that before.  Thanks for the link.

She had no indication of needing bedrest or anything when I saw her this weekend, and when she made that comment about 33 weeks.  She thought everything was totally fine until she went to the Dr today.

  • Fetal Fibronectin test. I had it done at 32 weeks a got a positive. I went into labor and had my baby at 38 weeks and 3 days. My doctor told me I was the exception to the rule, but it can be wrong.

  • "Full-term" for multiples is considered 33 weeks...meaning, that if you went into labor at that time, they would deliver you...it is 37 weeks for singleton births.
