PSA: Child Bicycle Helmet Website

Now that the weather is getting warm, I wanted to get DD a bike helmet so we can take her on bike rides in the bike trailer that we have. However, I didn't have any information on when it's safe to take a child in a bike trailer. Also, I was wondering if a higher priced bike helmet means safer or just more money out of your pocket.

I found this great website that has tons of great articles and information on bike helmets for children. They also have a section on bike helmet reviews for 2010. And I was happy to read that the cheaper helmets are just as safe. I also found out that they don't recommend taking children on a bike until they are 1 year old so DD will have to wait until June for her first bike ride.

Anyway, I thought I would share the link since it's finally getting warm here where we can enjoy the outdoors with our LOs.

ETA: The website is the Bike Helmet Safety Institute. It says it's volunteer run and consumer funded.

  • thanks for posting!

I wanted us to get one of those bike trailers but DH refuses. He admits it's probably safe enough on the W&OD but would never ever let DD sit in one anywhere near a road, b/c he's afraid a car will hit the trailer. DD does love bikes and rides a tricycle but I guess it'll be at least another year before we can go for an actual bike ride.

Yeah, we got a trailer as a gift. We bike in Rock Creek Park near our house. When we do our 12 mile bike ride, we have to cross a few roads with cars (maybe about 4 roads each way) but other than that it's all in the woods. So, we'll just be extra careful when crossing the roads. I'm just so excited the warm weather is here. We did a long walk with DD in the stroller this weekend and she loved it.

  • Thank you for posting. I bought my DH and iBert for Christmas (not a trailer, but a seat that goes in front of DH) and I still need to get DD a helmet so they can ride together.  If you haven't looked at the iBert, it gets great reviews and is very safe.  The trailers makes me nervous too.
  • dear vtkendra,

it has been a while since i have read the site (i had been looking into it a while ago), but i thought i would toss a few things out there.

first, you may want to consider what kind of trailer you have. if it has a seat that rises above the neck, your babys head/helmet (that extends beyond the shoulders) may bump against it and jostle the helmet and reposition it.

second, even though the cheaper helmets are rated just as well, i have a hard time buying them. a) the employees arent trained to fit the helmet to the child (or help you choose the right helmet) and b) the employees often dont have as much care for the merchandise as a worker at a good bike shop. they are less likely to think twice about dropping a helmet on the floor (thus compromising its integrity).

third, similar to the above, try not to let the child remove the helmet herself -- chances are good that she will drop it on the ground

forth, yay for helmets and getting the kids used to them early!

  • BTW, I got Allie's helmet, pictured in the siggy, from Amazon.com.  https://bit.ly/coIkec  It fits perfectly on her infant head and provides a lot of coverage over her head.  Looks like they are on sale for $22.01!
  • Thanks!  I just purchased the one from Amazon. I'd been meaning to look into this. I guess we have a couple of months to wait for babygirl to go in the trailer, but we can start using it for her big sister!
