Please Help- Good Experience at Bryn Mawr???

HI Im 33 weeks pregnant and scheduled to delivery at Bryn Mawr. My whole pregancy I have been debating to switch out of my OB pracitce (Im with Br. Burns/Ish). I decided to stay probably out of laziness.

I read the post someone else had about Lankenau and Bryn Mawr and everyone said they had such a great experience at Lankenau and not so good at Bryn Mawr.

First, I thought that Bryn Mawr also has a new delivery wing with all privtae rooms? I do not want to share a room.

 How are they nurses?

Any thoughts would be very helpful.

  • I haven't given birth yet, but I will be at Bryn Mawr. However I had kidney stones last weekend and was admitted to L&D at Bryn Mawr and then sent to Maternity overnight and they were great! The nurses were so attentive and I was completely relaxed other than the sever pain!

  • I wasn't impressed with the nurses.  They buzzed in and out of my room throughout my entire recovery and shot things into my IV without bothering to tell me what was happening (I asked, and they would give me a blow off answer and then buzz out of there).  It is a large maternity ward and I think they were VERY busy.  I had a private room- I think it would have to be a mad amount of babies being born at the same time to have to share a room.  I wouldn't worry about that.

  • I delivered at Bryn Mawr and had a great experience. They do have some semi-private rooms, but they only use them when all the private rooms are full - which I was told happens rarely. (I had a private room)

I thought the nurses were great and took great care of DS and I.

    GL!

  • I am so glad to hear some positive feedback- I feel it is too late to changce doctors and hsoptials! I am plannign to go natural and am hoping the nurses are suportive of that. My doctor also told me that I did not have to get an IV for fluids- I am hoping that is the case as well.

Thanks so much for your thoughts

  • I go to the same OB practice and I had equally luke warm feelings about them....still do. My experience at Bryn Mawr was not great but I dont think it was bad either. The L&D nurses were phenomenal--and thats when you really need someone thats nice and patient and understanding. I knew I would be getting an epidural so that wasnt an issue for me but I certainly didnt feel like they pushed it or wouldnt have been supportive of other choices. I agree with pp that the maternity nurses left a lot to be desired, but they werent mean or anything, just not very attentive or overly personal, but all in all, fine. And I wouldnt even worry about sharing a room--you would have to be the 25th person in the maternity ward to need to share a room and that almost never happens. When I had dd it was the busiest it had been in months and there were about 19 women there. Dont worry, you'll be fine.

I went natural with DS and plan to go that way this time as well. The L&D nurses were wonderful with that. Once I told them I wasn't interested in having any drugs/epi - they never asked me again. But they did really encourage me - saying what a great job I was doing, etc. I did need the IV (I was GBS+ and had to have antibiotics) but I didn't really mind it.

GL! Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • BM is a GREAT hospital.  I am sure everyone will have little complaints about wherever they deliver.  Except for the nurse calling me the wrong name during delivery (haha....I think it made me push harder b/c it was annoying me), the rest of my stay was great. The nurses were nice and attentive.  I was lucky to get a private room. I don't think anyone shared one while we were there.
  • I had an amazing experience at Bryn Mawr. I think, to some point, your birth experience is what you make of it. I went in, praying for a natural birth, but knowing the most important thing was to get the baby out safely and keep me safe as well. The rest was gravy. I was blown away by how encouraing and kind the nurses were at BM and I was able to have the natural birth I wanted due to their care, but mostly, due to my husband's encouragement. Go in expecting the minimum and be pleasantly surprised at the rest. That's my two cents!  Good luck!
  • I have had friends who have had their children at BM and have had great experiences.  I was also concerned about sharing a room, but was reassured by my doctor that it rarely comes to sharing a room.  And if you do have to share, it would most likely be for a morning/afternoon while either you or the other patient was leaving.
