Where Can I go to Learn about the Health Care Bill?

So I'm more than embarassed to admit this but I feel like I hardly know anything about this health bill. All I know is bits and pieces that I have caught while listening to the news in the morning.

This is the summary that I have. It's going to tax wealthier people, make health insurance mandatory with a fine for people who don't get it, get rid of denying a person with a pre existing condition (which I think is awesome), no $ available for abortions, and that it's going to cost a lot of money...except somewhere I heard it was going to really reduce our devicit. At one point I remember hearing that it was really going to screw over the middle class (what's new there) but don't remember why it might screw me over.

So that being said...where can I go to learn more or if you know more please feel free to post it (no fighting though, i feel too crappy to read a bunch of bickering today) I really don't understand why people are so opposed to it and it's probably because I know very little of the details.

TIA

  • I feel the same way.  I have only heard what I interpret to be very biased views.  I just want the facts.  Is that possible to find?

  • well it sounds like you pretty much have the gist of it kind of. I think the only way to really know what the real scoop is would be to read the bill, but it's like a gazillion pages long (I think it's actually longer than the tax code ha!) so otherwise you just have to listen to reports from both sides and infer that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. But there are definite fact points of the bill, not sure if there's one general place to find them other than the bill itself. Don't know if that helps or not??

    I feel this way all the time and it makes me frustrated and feel helpless to fight for or against anything because I just feel like I never really know what's going on.

  • I can give you a few more talking points on it, but like everyone do not know the whole of the bill, in fact there are still changes being made on it, those will be voted on later this week.

    • In the next six months you will no longer be dropped for having a certain type of illness;
    • In the next six months children with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage (at some point this is true for adults but I do not recall when);
    • In the next six months there will no longer be caps on how much your insurance has to pay over a lifetime, for instance cancer patients won't have to stop treatment because they've reached their limit;
    • Cadillac policies will be taxed, these are the best of the best and now they will be taxed similar to income
    • Eventually everyone will have to have insurance and so long as insurance that would be less than 9% of your income you will be fined for not buying it, if you cannot find insurance less than 9% of your income you will not be fined and you might qualify for subsidies to help you purchase it;
    • Eventually all employers with more than 5 employees will need to provide insurance and will receive tax breaks for this;
    • Supposedly, but this is still not clear, no federal funds may be used for abortions, I don't know if this is elective or all though;
    • And there will be medicare/medicaid available for a larger part of the population

    Other than that I'm as clueless as you, however I'm in the group that truly believes that something had to be done, hopefully this will bring about good changes for all.  Just note that for folks with insurance, not too much really changes.
