Parenting after 35

bedtime: any thoughts/advice?

I figure I would ask here since we're momma's of babies of all ages...

Sabrina isn't really on a set schedule when it comes to eating but will generally eat 4-6oz every 3-4 hours during the day and 5-6oz every 5-6 hours at night. I really don't mind her waking at night once it's her bedtime, but I would love to figure out a way to get her to go a little longer after her first wakeup.

Her last bottle before bed is between 6 or 7 and she'll go down between 730-830. She'll sleep till around midnight or so and drink about 6oz but rather than sleep another 5-6 hours, she reverts back to the daytime hours of 3-4 hours.

Basically it would peachy if she could wait till 5AM to eat as that's when I get up to get us both ready for daycare and work - including a bottle for her. But instead, she tends to wake around 330 or 4.  I don't have a problem getting up and feeding her - and she does eat well and go back to sleep well - but it would be easier on her, I think, if she would just wait till 5.

Who am I kidding? It would be easier on ME if she would wait till 5. :D

Any thoughts on how I can get her to hold off an hour? This morning I kept going in and giving her a Binky and she'd drift off for 5 or 10 minutes then wake up fussing again... I tried to avoid giving her the Binky and a couple times she got quiet for a couple minutes but then got louder and louder and louder... This went on for 45 minutes before she finally started screaming and I just gave her a bottle which she wolfed down. I really don't want her to CIO bc ... ugh. I'm just not ready for that quite yet. Any thoughts? Do I need to just buck up and just let it happen when it happens? Should I try to put her to bed later (I try this every night bc I miss her so much during the day but she's SO tired bc of all the stimuli at DC so this isn't a great option right now)? Should we change something with her midnight feeding (DH takes the midnight shift)?

Re: bedtime: any thoughts/advice?

  • I don't have any advice since C does the same thing. Goes for about 4-5 hours the first time she goes to bed but after the first wake up it is every 2.5-3 hours after that. I'll be reading the responses.

  • I don't have any experience with this, but I have heard that dreamfeeding helps.  Maybe try this before you go to bed a few nights.

You know what worked for us?  Time.  Yeah, sorry I don't have a better answer but there it is.  Eventually the wake-up time for the first middle of night feed moved back a bit and then the middle of the night feed dropped altogether.  It'll get better as she grows and can eat more.  Keep putting her down per usual and it'll smooth out soon enough.  My kids go to bed by 6:30 (DS) and 7 (DD) and sleep for a full 12 hrs, although DS will wake up off and on for a middle of the night feed depending on whether he got his 3 meals of solids in or not.

  • Have you tried feeding her more? At that age, DD ate a dream feed at around 11 pm of 6-8 oz and then would sleep until the next morning around 6. It sounds like she is just hungry so increasing her day time calories might work...We dropped the dream feed at around 4 months and she started sleeping for 12 hours straight, but she was already taking in around 30 oz during the day.

  • No advice as my DD does not STTN. I just wanted to say you are a supermom to have those feedings & yet get up at 5am to get ready for work. I will remember you next time I silently complain when she wakes to snack a couple of times at night. At least I can sleep late. (as long as she does that is.)

  • Miller does the same thing, but I know it is because he is tiny and can barely eat 4 oz. at a time.  I am sure it will just take time, but I am tired all of the time!

  • Thanks for the input everyone. I do appreciate it!

I think I'm gonna start putting 7-8 oz in her bottles... she's been just now actually finishing 6 oz so maybe she'll take more and that will sustain her thru the night... or not. : )  We'll see.  I'm dead tired but it's truly OK. I miss her sooo much during the day when she's at DC and she's totally knocked out when we get home till she's hungry and then goes to sleep for the night pretty much, so these middle of the night feedings is just one extra time I actually get to hold her.  But I know it's going to catch up to me soon...
