Major gas issues - help!

Hi ladies! I haven't posted since my son was born but I finally have some time while he is napping right now. I was hoping to get some advice regarding his gas issues. Basically we go through the same cycle each day - he will eat and then usually 2-3 hours later he will start having one of his "tummy aches" as I call them. He pushes so hard and cries and cries - I hold him in this certain position and eventually he will let out between 8 - 25 big farts and then a big exposive poop or two. Sometimes the whole thing only takes 15 minutes...sometimes it takes a few hours. I feel so bad for the poor little guy, he is such a happy baby the rest of the time except when he has one of these tummy aches which he has about 4 times a day. The gas also wakes him up from his naps and his sleep at night...I wake up to the sound of his grunting every night. I am EBF and haven't had much luck with my pump (I only get 2 oz at a time), I go to a LC almost every week and we have tried different things but so far nothing is working. I am almost to the point where I want to try some formula to see if his tummy reacts better but I have been warned it might make it worse. I know gas is common in babies but I just feel like has so much. Anyone experiencing anything similar or have any ideas/advice? Sorry this is so long! TIA!

Re: Major gas issues - help!

  • Dumb question.... are you burping him between the eating and the farts?  Have you tried gas drops?

  • Yes I burp him after every feeding - he usually does one or two loud ones and he spits up a few times after each feeding as well. My LC got me to buy probiotic drops to balance his digestive system which we have been using for almost a month now and I haven't seen an improvement. Last week I bought Ovol (gas drops) after some advice from my doctor but they don't seem to be helping either. I should have mentioned that sometimes the only way to get that poop out is to feed him which works occasionally but just starts the whole cycle over again and I worry that I am feeding him too often depending on when he last ate. I am also thinking about eliminating dairy but not really sure that is the problem.
  • It really sucks doesn't it? I just feel so helpless! The way I hold him to help get the gas out is to turn him around so his back is against my stomach and his head is kind of resting between my boobs and then I hold him underneath his legs so that they are kind of tucked up into his chest and then I walk and bounce around.
  • i am having this exact same problem...i dont know what to do. i figured it was something i ate and was going to try a bottle of formula for her.

i still might, she latches well and i have no supply issues but this discomfort she has going on is going to be the end of me.

if the formula bottle works, i will let you all know. *fingers crossed*

have you tried gripe water yet? one of my friends was telling me its a God -send for tummy issues and its all herbal. I got a new parents survival kit at my shower and was excited this was in it.
