If your LO has a dairy allergy

Are you EBF or using formula?  Has your LO ever had a reaction to any of the hypoallergenic formulas made for babies with dairy allergies?

I had been EBF and consider myself "dairy free" for the past 1.5 weeks.  On Friday though, I introduced Nutramigen to him because I'm pretty sure I'll need to supplement at least one bottle while he's a daycare, since I can't seem to pump enough.  I only gave him about 2 oz on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Sunday morning and this morning, I noticed he had bloodier stools than usual.  Is it possible that he is also reacting to this hypoallergenic formula?  That is the only thing I can think of that is different these past few days.  I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, so I doubt it's a reaction to something from me.

FWIW, I do have a call into his pedi about this.  I'm just so frustrated.

Re: If your LO has a dairy allergy

  • I'm EBFing and have cut all dairy. We gave him Nutramigen at 4 weeks  (were going to try to move to FF instead of me cutting dairy) but after one day on it, he became a nightmare and cried for 4 hours straight so we went back to EBF and I gave up dairy. Nutramigen still has some dairy- it's just broken down more than the other formulas. Hopefully the pedi can give you advice about the bloody stools. I think Neocate is the only forumla broken down more than Nutramigen and it's $$$$$.

Hang in there- I have shed many tears over LO and his feeding issues with dairy.

  • You might need to switch to Neocate, which is generally sold behind the counter at pharmacies.  It's an elemental formula, so the dairy protein isn't present at all.  Nutramigen (and Alimentum, the Similac version of Nutramigen) still have the dairy protein (it's broken down more thoroughly), so it can still bother some babies with protein intolerances.

Good luck figuring it out.  DD had a milk protein allergy, and I ended up having to cut out soy as well (the proteins are really similar).  It was kind of a trial and error thing with her until we figured out what worked.

  • We're FFing but I stopped BFing before I knew for sure if DS had a dairy allergy. He had bloody stools with regular formula, severe constipation on soy (no matter what we did to get things going) and now hypoallergenic. He's been on nutramigen for almost 3 weeks now and hasn't had a reaction to it. It did get things going within a day or two of switching to nutramigen.
