I got the Medela PISA. I really liked it. I think it was around $250? I really liked it and I know I will use it again someday, so the price didn't really bother me. I bought it from my LC. It was cheaper than buying from BRU.
With my first, I used a Medela PISA exclusively for pumping. He was a good feeder, and I only pumped at work.
My second child is not a good nurser. I have had a few bouts of mastitis too. For all of this, I ended up renting a Medela Symphony for home use, and I keep my Medela PISA at work for use there. (The rental is better for me with the amount of pumping I'm doing.)
-- You might consider renting until you learn how things will go.
-- You might want to run the numbers for formula costs/mo. If you can get to where you're exclusively feeding breast milk, then you can usually justify the cost of a good pump?
I use a pump 7-8 times a day. My finicky child has yet to have more than 12 oz. of formula (even when in he was in NICU, I pumped for him). I have really paid for my pump between my two kids many time over.
I would not have tried returning it. I doubt anyone would take it back.
Good luck! For me, the pump was worth the high cost.

And lol at your last statement!!!!!
Ditto except I bought it from Babies R Us and I think I used a 20% coupon. They are expensive, but still cheaper than formula at $80 or so a month :-), esp if you plan to have more than 1.
I used the Lansinoh double electric pump 3 times a day at work for about 6 months and never had any issues with it. It is on the cheaper end of pumps ~$160 I think.
I'm planning to rent a pump ( from your hospital, A Women's Work, etc.) until I know if I have a supply and is worth purchasing.
This is what I'd recommend.
I borrowed a pump from a friend and bought new tubing, etc for it. DS has no problems breastfeeding, but I had supply problems. I ended up renting a hospital grade pump to try to get my supply up and not using the PISA (the advice of lactation consultants). For next time, I'll rent a hospital grade pump again and hope for better results. I'm *so* happy I didn't buy a pump. To have spent so much on a pump and then end up feeding $60 worth of formula a week would have really sucked.
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!
BFP with no treatment!
I rented form the hospital so that I could know if my supply was going to be an issue again. I highly recommend going this route. The rental was about $60 for one month.
DH just ordered the Medela PISA from an online store for $225. If you look for online vendors, they are no longer allowed to print the price of the Medela pumps, so you will have to email or call for a price.
I wanted to make sure I'd be able to breastfeed before buying a pump, but was shocked at the price of renting a pump. In the long run it will end up being cheaper for me to buy one; especially if we are able to have a second child in a few years.
If you don't mind buying a used pump, you can find pretty good deals on Craigs List.

Also...ask for the pump while you're in the hospital and so you get all the tubing stuff so you can take home if you rent.
I have the Medela PISA and love it. For me it was absolutely worth the price because A) I was definitely going to return to work full-time and I was dead set on breastfeeding. I think that what you choose has a lot to do with how you foresee using it.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!
I have the PISA and love it. It was worth every penny I spent and more. I bought it from this company and got a much better deal than retail. I bought it before DD was born and it worked out perfectly for us.
She NEVER took a bottle so all of my pumping was really for nothing since I had to throw all of it out after IKE. I did use pumped BM when I started feeding her rice cereal, but otherwise she never needed the pumped milk. When I was working she just protested eating and made up for it at a later nursing session...most.stubborn.child.ever.
Thanks for all the input. I'm definitely leaning toward renting one at first to see how things go, unless I can find a good deal on one or can find a used one from a friend.

I had great success with the Lansinoh Double Electric and didn't have awful sticker shot with it:
