Babies: 9 - 12 Months

corn?

am i imagining something in regards to holding off on corn? earth's best has a corn and butternut squash puree and i bought a few jars, but for some reason i keep thinking corn is something i don't do yet.  did i make this up?  what about tomato?

Re: corn?

  • We've tried corn with DS. Not sure if we were supposed to hold off. I didn't know anything about it.

It's a grain, not a veggie, which I'm sure you already know. We don't give him much of it because it's more of a filler than anything and we want to make sure he has as much nutrition as he can. I guess I'm not sure of the nutritional value of corn....

Tomato is acidic. We don't worry about that, though. DS has it occasionally.

  • for some reason corn and tomato were both on the list my pede gave me of foods to avoid until age 1.  no idea why though!
  • :::lurking::: It's due to it being a potential high allergen food and choking hazard. I've also read that it has empty calories, and babies under 12 months need as much nutrition as possible.
  • I make a sweet potato and corn puree and my DD loves it. It was a recipe in the book I use. I didn't know it was a problem.
  • Really? I have never heard this....My LO loves corn.  I heat up those frozen mixed veggies and give them to her, she loves it! she is almost 11 months though...
  • Corn is a high allergin and it doesn't have much nutrients. Tomatoes are highly acidic and can be harsh on the tummy.
  • she actually just ate sweet potato and corn... corn isn't packed with nutrients, so I only give it occasionally, but I want her to be exposed to lots of variety. the tomato thing, from what I've read is because it's a high allergen (unless cooked at extremely high temps, which only big manufacturers can do - i.e. earths best), also it is acidic and can irritate reflux. We haven't had a problem with this with DD, so she does purees that are mixed with tomato. If you're still concerned, ask your pedi... personally, I think both are fine to give.
