1st Trimester

No weight gain and 8 weeks preggo!

Hi!

So does anyone else have this issue? I am small to average build. I am 5'3 and weigh 117 pounds before pregnancy. I am now 8 weeks and I haven't gained a single pound!! Is that normal with your first child? Is that normal at all? It's so funny because I dont even have any pregnancy symptoms either except for getting tired earlier at night. I had to see the ultrasound to believe it...and YEP I am pregnant! And it's not because of morning sickness and not being able to hold anything down because I am eating...actually I am eating more=0

Anyone else experience this? If so when did you start noticing your weight gain and SEEING your weight gain?

  • That's not a big deal.  Some women don't start gaining until well into the second trimester.  Your Dr. will let you know when to start worrying.

  • Don't worry alot of women don't start gaining weight until their 2nd trimester.  Ask your Dr. about it at your next appointment.  I think I've gained 2 pounds so far, but I haven't had a ton of morning sickness.

  • absolutely no need to worry.
  • Totally normal. Weight gain should be minimal in the 1st tri.
  • I'm tall and thin and with my first, I lost about 8 lbs during first tri. I didn't actually show a gain over my pre-preg weight until about 17-18 weeks. My OB wasn't concerned because everything else (BW, u/s) was perfectly normal. During first tri, you're supposed to gain 0-5 lbs, so it's fine if you're holding steady!

  • Don't worry the weight gain is sure to come. I actually have lost the last ten pounds I could lose before getting pregnant. The doctor has told me that the baby will that care of his/herself. Sometimes it sneeks up on you(as I have been told by family)

  • I just turned 13 and finally gained 1.5lbs. I was happy about that. I didn't want to gain a lot in 1st tri. I hear its bad. However I feel like I have gained a lot more than that. Bloat maybe.

  • I just had my 12 week appointment and was up three pounds, but it's definitely normal to have no weight gain in the first tri.  Some women even lose weight due to morning sickness.

My doctor did ask if I was eating more and not watching my calories as I would pre-pregnancy--I'm doing both--and she said that as long as I'm doing that while being healthy about it then she's not worried.

  • With DD, I was still 2 pounds less than pre-pregnancy weight at 22 weeks pregnant. I only gained 15 the whole pregnancy.
  • Thank you all for your quick responses! This is my first time being pregnant and I was just a little concerned...but now you have all reassured me=) Thank you!!!!!!!!
  • I'm almost 13 weeks pregnant and am still below my pre-pregnancy weight (thanks to m/s!). I too am average 5' 8.5"  140lbs. My doc said she didn't expect me to gain any weight until 15 or 16 weeks. Also, a lot of energy is required your first trimester, there is some serious work being done from the embryo to placenta-no wonder you're so hungry, right?! I'm sure you're ok, your doc will let you know either way :) Keep enjoying your lovely pregnancy! I'm jealous of the no m/s :)
  • Don't worry - like a PP said, your doctor will let you know if it's a problem.  Some people even lose 5-10 pounds in the first tri due to sickness/low appetite. Just last week, my doctor told me that I am only up 6-7 pounds, and that I need to gain weight.  It isn't a concern yet, but she definitely wants me to watch what I eat so I am steadily gaining now.  I'm not purposefully trying to NOT gain weight, it's just the way it's happened.  In fact, if you would have asked me in the beginning, I would have bet a million dollars I would have been up 20+ pounds by this point just because of the nature of the things I eat.

  • Not a big deal...some women even lose a little weight early on. Your doctor will let you know if it becomes a concern

  • I didn't gain a single pound until around 29 weeks. No worries.

This! The baby is VERY tiny at 8 weeks, so you shouldn't really be gaining besides water weight, etc. :) Count your blessings!

  • With my dd I didn't gain any weight until my 5th month and then I gained 29 pounds!
