Rolling over - now what?

That'll teach me to post about improvements in sleep *sigh*

DS can now roll over both ways, but when he rolls over onto his tummy in his crib at night, he gets hysterical. I *think* I would be ok with tummy sleeping only DS is letting me know that's not an option for him. What do I do - roll him back over, or let him try to figure it out by himself?

Re: Rolling over - now what?

  • DS can only roll from back to tummy - so when he ends up on his tummy he is very pissed. During the day I let him try and figure it out for a while until he gets really upset.  At night if he didn't go back to sleep then I put him on his back.  I have only found him asleep on his tummy once.....then an hour later he woke up and was not pleased :(

  • He'll figure it out pretty quickly. DS started doing this right on his 6 month birthday and within a week or so (maybe sooner!) he started just rolling back by himself. We went and flipped him if he got really upset but mostly because he's not fully weaned off the swaddle and we were a little worried. Now we put him in on his back and he almost immediately rolls onto his side, and he sleeps that way almost all night, with his little arm holding him up so he doesn't roll all the way over.

  • C got really pissed when he first started doing it, but now he's a stomach sleeper. Weird. He's always hated tummy time, so I don't know how that works out.

  • DD was a side sleeper and is now a stomach sleeper. If he's really screaming, go in and turn him over but let him practice rolling over from back to tummy and then tummy to back during the day, eventually he'll just roll himself into the position he wants to sleep in.
  • Thanks! I was hoping to hear that he'd figure it out quickly. Last night he slept like t&c described - I put him on his back, and he rolled to his side with his arm up for support.
