I am having a lot of trouble with breast feeding right now. my LO is 8 days old
He latches ok, but then doesn't really suck. He sucks like 4 or 5 times, and gives up. So I pump after every feeding and give it to him in the next feeding, but I'm only pumping like 30ml (1 oz) each time, and I worry it's not enough. Sometimes he roots a lot after a feeding and I feel like he's still hungry.
I was using SNS, but it doesn't seem to be working very well any more and I really just want to breastfeed without the SNS. How much is normal to pump 1 week in?
I'm meeting with the LC tomorrow, so I'll ask there as well...just looking for your experience. Thanks!
Re: Pumping - how much is normal?
When I first started pumping I would get about 15-20 ml. Within a week I think I got about 3 oz, now I get about 9 oz. The first few weeks I didn't miss a pumping, did it every four hours even at night ( I was up anyway, lol). Keep at it and you'll get more.
And don't worry about him not bf yet, it can take time, especially for babies born before 40 weeks. My first daughter was born at 37, I thought she'd never latch on so I gave up after a couple of weeks. Months later I was pumping when she started crying. I picked her up and she latched on without even trying. My second daughter was born at 35 weeks. She did the same as yours, latch but stop sucking. I gave her pumped milk in a bottle for several weeks then tried latching and now she's doing much better. Try not too stress, sometimes they just need time.
