Infertility

when it rains, it pours. . .

Thanks to New Jersey's a-hole scum of a governor,  my district will be starting the next school year 14 million in the hole.   Friday we were informed that every non-tenured staff and faculty in the district is getting a pink slip.  I was scheduled to receive tenure September 1st, 2010.  Thank God Dave is tenured so I will at least have benefits come september.  But think about the massive amount of unemployed teachers!  Not only are they now collecting unemployment but we will all be competing for a small number of jobs.

Needless to say London is post-poned (I will NOT say cancelled, we will go. . .when is in question tho) and adoption has to be on the back burner.

This just blows.

Re: when it rains, it pours. . .

  • Yup...NY's Gov is a scum, too.  I also in the higher ed field but do not teach. We are also cutting back.... I wonder about my job since it's PT.My DH works for the NYS and is still waiting on 2009 and 2010 contract raises. By the time we get that check...they'll take so much out in taxes it won't be worth much. GRRRRR.

Hope you can escape the layoff and get to go to London sooner rather than later. Adoption too!

  • Ugh.  I'm sorry.  I hate when districts do that.  Is it possible that you'll get pink slipped, but then not actually lose your job come September?

  • I'm really sorry that's happening Sad I just don't see how they can do away with teachers. Getting rid of teachers doesn't reduce the # of students there to be taught. It just doubles to size of the classes and drastically impairs the education we are providing for the kids.

    So sad Tongue Tied

  • That's horrible.  Hopefully something will turn up for you.  DH told me to expect a 4% prop tax increase in our district.

I don't understand why he thinks cutting education is a good idea.  The classrooms are already too crowded IMO.  If he wants to save money, how about asking all the politicians to take a pay cut.

maybe.  I have special ed on my side.  But still have to be worried about people who have moved on to administrative positions that have tenure in special ed being rif into whatever sped positions there will be left.  however, dave would be thrilled with me getting a contract after a pink slip b/c it would mean i can collect unemployment all summer and still know i have a job in september.  the whole business just pisses me off.

  • It's even worse in GA.  My district was down 60 million this year, and next year they have to cut and ADDITIONAL 140 million.  About 500 teachers will be let go and a lot parapros and other staff positions.  Class size is also going up.  Crazy, and now the lawmakers are worried about healthcare when they should be focusing on the economy.

  • Oh, sweetie.......

I hope that perhaps after all of the local school budgets have passed, perhaps it won't be as grim?  I know in DH's school last year, they were able to call back most of the staff that they had to give pink slips to.

    I am sorry.... SO sorry.
