Success after IF

Repost from IF: # of embryos you transferred

Lab just called and said that my dr wants to put 1 embryo in tomorrow 5dt because of my age (28). So i asked her what the best ones looked like and she said that 4 of them are advanced blastocyst and then are are others that aren't as advanced yet. So basically she would be transferring 1 blastocyst.

She said that my dh and i could say we wanted 2 transferred but she doesn't recommend it. Ok, so im stuck, Im so worried about only transferring 1 and it not working.

WWYD? and How many have you ladies transferred?

Re: Repost from IF: # of embryos you transferred

  • I transfered 2 on a 3dt. I was 31. One stuck. So obviously, I am so glad we transfered 2.

I think it depends on your feelings about having multiples. Are you okay with it or not really? Are you planning on freezing the other embies? Do you have IF coverage? Would you be okay to do an FET or another fresh IVF if this didn't work? My answers would all be based on those questions.

We were 100% OOP so we couldn't afford to do another IVF. It was our only chance.

  • 4 but mine were poor graded and had to be transferred on day three because they would not have made it to five day transfer.

I'd say given the quality that one would be fine, but it is totally up to you.  FWIW I was 29 at my last IVF cycle so I don't believe age has anything to do with it.

Yes, we have talked about it and are fine with having multiples. We do plan on freezing the remaining embryos should this cycle not work out. We are lucky enough to have IVF coverage, so if this didn't work out we hopefully would have frozen embies to use.

    thanks for your help.

I think these are really great points to think about.

For both of my fresh IVFs we transferred 2, but I was 34 at the time ( a month shy of 35 for #2).  For my first FET, we did two as well as that was all that was left after the thaw.  For this one, our ( so far) sticky BFP we transferred 3 BUT, I was 35 and if was a frozen transfer. We did have to ask ourselves if we would be okay with the outcome either way.

Good luck to you.  Whatever you decide, I hope it leads to your sticky BFP.

  • Mine were all 3dt.  In each case, except the last, we transferred all the embryos we had.

    IVF #1 - 1
    IVF #4 - 4
    IVF #5 - 2
    IVF #7 - 2
    IVF #8 - 3 (DE from a 23 year old)

It sounds like you have a lot that are doing really well and will, most likely, freeze some.  If you are OK with multiples, you could do 2, but, in your case, if I was in a position where I could afford to do a FET if needed, I'd probably do 1, take a chance, and do the FET if it doesn't work.

  • On our one and only IVF we transferred 2!  We were OOP and there was too much of a gamble to only tranfer 1 embryo.  We are gearing up again and will be having an ER and ET next month.  Our RE told us we should only transfer 1 this time, and we have opted to still go with 2.  Basically, I have been looking at like this: I would rather have twins than not be successful, so I am willing to take that chance.  However, if I had insurance coverage things might be different.  GL!!!!!!!!!!

  • IVF #1 - tx 2, BFN

    FET #1 - tx 3, 1 stuck, then m/c

    IVF #2 - tx 3, 1 stuck, then m/c

IVF #3 - tx 4, 3 stuck, will be delivering triplets in 4 days! It was not in our life plan to have 3 kids, and certainly not 3 at once, but we were getting to the end of our emotional and financial ropes so we decided to take the gamble.

    good luck!

  • IVF #1 - transferred 1 8 cell on day 3 - my DD is 16 mths

    FET #1 - transferred 1 (originally an 8 cell, down to a 5 cell) - BFN

    IVF #2 - transferred 1 8 cell on day 3 - pg with #2

My RE also strongly recommends SETs with good quality embies, based on age (I'm now 29) and to reduce the risk of multiples.  She's pretty conservative, but for this point in my life, I am comfortable with that.  GL to you!!

  • I am in the 2ww of my first IVF right now!  Our RE also gave us some pressure to only transfer 1 blastocyst (I am 29), but told us that he would transfer two if my DH and I agreed.  We paid OOP for our treatment and I felt like I wanted to the best chance possible so we ended up transferring two!  We find out Friday whether they are snuggled in or not!  Good luck with your decision!
  • Thanks ladies for all of your advice/personal experience. We still don't know what we r going to do, but have until tomorrow am to decide.
  • I'm 29.  We decided to transfer 2 because they were "good not great quality."  Like most, we were OOP and didn't know if we'd be able to afford another cycle.  We ended up pregnant with twins but lost one at 9 wks.

I know it's a hard decision.  Good luck making your decision.

  • We transferred one great quality 5 day blastocyst and got a BFN with our fresh IVF cycle.

We then transferred 2 good quality frozen blastocysts on a FET.  I'm an now 9 weeks pregnant with twins.   We are very much excited about raising twins however I am worried about being able to carry the twins to full term.

I'm 33 and we were dealing with MFI.  It is such a difficult decision to make. Good luck.

  • isn't there a standard way to freeze? (we're doing our 1st IVF in May, so I am still learning) but I thought they froze 2 to a vial... or not?

So if you freeze 3 together, and they all survive the thaw... would you transfer all 3?

GL with your decision and transfer!

For IVF #1 my RE said our quality was good enough to just transfer 1 - however, we are 100% out of pocket for all IF treatment and were not comfortable with that.  We put back 2 grade 4BB blasts and got pregnant but unfortunately I had a miscarriage a few days shy of 6 weeks.

For IVF #2 my RE was set on transferring 2 given my history.  We put back 2 grade 5AA blasts (I think - they may have been 4AA) and both embryos stuck.  One of them split into identical twins so we were pregnant with triplets.  Unfortunately, we lost our identical twins at 9 weeks.  However, our singleton is currently thriving and growing perfectly.

You just need to be sure you are ok with the possibility of more than twins.  Obviously it is not normal to get more babies than embryos transferred - but the possibility is there.  We were shocked, to say the least, when we saw three hearts beating at our 6 week ultrasound.

  • I am the same age and did the same thing 1 blast day 5 and she took! GL!

We transferred 2, but they were not advanced blasts.  They were respectable blasts -grade 4BB where grade 5AA (or even grade 6) is best. We also did not know if we would have any blasts to freeze, and since it was a donor egg cycle, starting all over again would be devastating.  So the embryologist recommended transferring 2, and we did.

We had no frosties, and only 1 stuck, so I'm glad we transferred 2.

In your case, it sounds like you will have excellent quality blasts and probably some to freeze.  If that's the case I'd transfer 1.

I was not up for twins.  Especially now that I have just 1 infant, I cannot fathom how twin mammas handle 2!!!

  • I would transfer one if I were you.  We were in a similar situation except our RE just transferred two in all cases.  Two stuck for me.  I was 29 at the time.  I know it's hard to choose single embryo transfer, but stats in Europe prove that in a case like yours transferring two only increases your chance of multiples, not of pregnancy.  And a singleton pregnancy is much less risky.
  • I am 29 (and was at the time of ET as well).  I don't know what grade our blasts were, but was told that they were very good quality.  My doctor recommended transferring our 2 best blasts, and we did.  I am now pregnant with twins.

If I could do it again, I would transfer 1.  I have been fearful of losing the babies for much of my pregnancy and was on bedrest from 22-34 weeks.  I am now in the clear and set to deliver two healthy babies sometime between now and April 8, but if I could have lived without the anxiety and bedrest, that would have been great.

I know it's a really hard decision.  Just be sure you are ok with having as many babies as embryos you transfer.

  • I'm older than you, at 36. We transferred 2 'beautiful' blasts. One stuck.

We actually did have two at the first u/s, but lost one almost immediately, so I'm glad we did two. However, we were also completely OOP and I was ok with twins (although we were completely freaked out by the possibility of two when we saw those two sacs!). I'm admittedly relieved we only have one left....

In our case, two was what the RE recommended and we were fine with that. He told me he was prepared to argue with me if we'd wanted to do three (I didn't!)

We also had very high quality embryos, and 5 made them to freeze, so we have some leftovers for future tries.

  • Our first IVF, I was 31 and we transferred 2 expanded blasts and got a BFN.  Our first FET, I was still 31 and transferred 2, 5 day blasts and one stuck.

Everyone is different, but when we do FET #2 for baby #2, we'll transfer 2 again.  For us, only 1 out of 4 5 day blasts stuck, so I would want to give us the best chance to have at least one baby.  We would also be fine with multiples.

  • I am 30 and had 28 eggs retrieved, 17 fertilized on my IVF #1.  The RE strongly recommended SET based on my IF diagnosis and the quality of the embryos.  So we transferred one "perfect" blast on day 5.  We froze 8 blasts.  We also had insurance coverage that paid for the first IVF but is now tapped out.  Still, we were ok with having to pay OOP for a FET if the IVF #1 didn't work.  I was ok with the idea of raising multiples, but scared of the risks during pregnancy.

Of course I'm happy with the decision we made since the SET worked.  It's a tough choice, but I've seen research lately showing more and more success with SET.  Good luck!
