Especially if your DC has had it - what were the first symptoms?
Logan has a fever tonight, which came almost a week after he developed a mild cough and stuffy nose. He wouldn't eat today and didn't nap worth a damn, so by the time it was bedtime he was miserable, wimpering, and seemed to have chills. His temp was 102 at bedtime. We gave him Motrin and Baby Vicks on his chest before bed and have been checking on him (sleeping soundly) frequently. I was too scared to give him a bath because I was freaked out about causing a febrile siezure (I ran a call on one several years ago and the paramedics explained that sometimes giving a feverish baby a bath can cause the feb. siezure because it drastically changes their body temp - anyone know if this is right or am I remembering it totally wrong?)
Anyway, 3 weeks ago we took him to the dr. for stuffy nose/coughing (and very slight fever - below 100), mainly because there had been a case of whooping cough in his daycare. They tested him for seasonal flu, H1N1 and whooping cough - negative on all, but he did have a viral form of strep and we gave him prescription meds for his cough. Until tonight, his stuffy nose/cough was the same as it was 3 weeks ago, but now he has the high fever so of course I'm worried now that it's something more serious. I'm asking about H1N1 because 2 weeks ago, one of the teachers at his daycare had it (not his teacher, though).
I told DH that in the morning the motrin should be worn off and if his fever is still high we'll take him to urgent care to get the H1N1 test. Of course I'm sitting here at work worried about him, and worried that I'm neglecting something that might be serious and should I have just taken him to urgent care this afternoon when DH suggested it... Sorry this is so long. I hate slow nights at work when my baby is sick - it does make the mind wander!! Thanks for reading.
Re: Well crap... If you and/or your DC has had H1N1... (ugh- long and rambly, sorry)
I haven't had H1N1, but there are a couple of really crappy colds going around and I have had both of them within a 3 week period. One comes with a 24 hour-ish fever, chills, body aches, congestion (but not necessarily a runny nose) and a sore throat that can last for several days. I caught that one at my school and I got a secondary ear infection from the congestion.
The other one starts with a dry cough and a runny nose, followed by a low-mid grade fever that's manageable with Motrin, more coughing and more mucous that stick around for about a week or more. I currently am experiencing this one, which I caught from DS, who got it at pre-school. One of his classmates (with asthma) had it and it turned into a secondary infection of pneumonia.
Marisa has this right now.
When she had H1N1, it was a super quick onset...meaning she was basically fine, and then woke us at 1 am with a fever of 103, puking and coughing--an uncontrollable cough, literally coughing every 30 seconds. That cough lasted just over 24 hours (with Tamiflu started 12 hours after onset).

Bathing can and does alter the body temp of infants and children. Always wait at least an hour after bathing to take an accurate temp. I've never heard of one directly causing a febrile sz but I suppose it's possible. Tepid baths are no longer recommended to "treat" a fever, so maybe that's why? A cool washcloth on the forehead can be a comforting measure but doesn't create the rapid body response a bath does.
I got H1N1 pretty early in the season last year and DD never did (treated prophylactically though). I think he just sounds like he's "just sick". Most of the kids we saw in ER had a sudden onsight of very high fever with few other immediate symptoms besides the body ache that comes with a fever and of course the lovely addition of vomiting.
Get well soon Logan!
We all had it at the same time, and both kids tested positive for H1N1. Alex had a fever of around 101. I gave him some motrin with the pedi's blessing. He just wanted to be held all. the. time. He whimpered and fussed a lot, and he slept a lot. I am EBFing though, and the pedi said that likely contributed a lot to Alex having the mildest case in our household.
I was the sickest. I had 102+ with tylenol, a horrible headache, a nasty cough, chills, and body aches. I was miserable, and I was not thrilled with having to spend literally hours walking the halls with Alex because he wouldn't let me put him down. The fever lasted about five days. The chills were only on the second day I was sick. The body aches were days two and three, I think. The horrible cough lasted for almost two weeks and gradually got better during that time. I have mild asthma, and I had some chest pains and a little bit of difficulty breathing during that time too. I was seriously considering going to the doctor to make sure I wasn't developing pneumonia when I finally started feeling better.
