This is probably bad, but I didn't change anything until I actually met with the dietician and had to start testing my blood sugar. I didn't go crazy, but I figured my time was limited to actually be able to indulge much, so I took advantage.
She could start by cutting out the obvious and (relatively) easy stuff like sugary drinks (juice, pop, etc) and sweets.
I changed my diet as much as I could as soon as I got the GD call. I didn't want my sugars spiking if I could help it. I used some online sites to figure it out.
She needs to be eating whole wheat and cut out sugar and juices.
Approx carb counts should be:
25-30g for breakfast (ex: toast, egg(s), cheese)
20g carbs for snacks (mid-morning, afternoon, and bedtime)
45-50g carbs for lunch and dinner
Always have protein with her carbs. Always have veggies with lunch and dinner because the fiber helps your body digest the carbs.
She may need to adjust her meals once she starts testing her blood sugar, but this is a good start. For me even though they said 25-30g carbs for breakfast I found that it was too much and I had to cut that down to about 15g. They make low carb tortillas, low carb bread. High protein bars are good for snacks on the go.
Hopefully that helps your friend.
