Sleeping Through the Night

I am hoping that some of you may have some possible solutions to my dilemma.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and am having issues sleeping through the night. My two year-old sleeps through the night better than I do.

For some reason with the past two weeks I have been waking up between 1 and 1:30 am. and not being able to fall back asleep for about an hour. I have tried googling the problem as well as using webmd to find solutions. I've tried drinking half a cup of water before trying to lay back down (a google solution), I have tried switching sleeping positions, all among the other things I have tried.

It is bothersome to me because my normal wake-up time is 3am and without that hour's worth of sleep; I am finding it difficult to wake up on time and I am getting tired sooner in the day (about an hour before I usually take a mid-day nap).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... I am open to trying just about anything at this point.

Re: Sleeping Through the Night

  • I am 16 weeks along, got the same sleeping issues & find that I have to start thinking about bedtime hours before I go to bed. I drink Chamomille tea or warm milk (but not too close to bed time or i'll be making more bathroom trips than I already do)  warm bath definately help.  A lower back massage, or any kind helps to realx me. Hope these help!

  • Thank you for the advice. I will surely try those.

It just aggitates me because it is never a constant thing. It might happen one or two nights in a row, sometimes three, then stop for a day or two.

And my usual sleeping habits go -

    Bed by 10:00 pm

    Awake by 3:00 - 4:00 am

Back to bed by 7:00 am (at the latest).

Awake again anywhere from 9:00 - 10:00 am

(So, at the most I am getting 9 hours of sleep, usually. And waking up at that particular time really throws off that schedule.)

  • Let me know if you were able to find something else that works, it just might be helpful for me. It is aggitating because not being able to sleep makes me cranky & I hate sleepig during the day and not being able to check off things on my to-do list or even spend time out with my husband.
  • One of the pregnancy books I read mentioned eating something small because you might be hungry without even realizing it. So far (knock on wood) I've been able to get back to sleep pretty fast after my frequent potty breaks, but it might be something to try.
  • my ob gave me ambien to take periodically for this problem. I found that I could take it for a couple days and it would get my sleep schedule back on track and I could stop for a while. I slept SO much better!! It's almost like I had to retrain my body to sleep through the night again.
  • I've finally made it to 20 weeks and the issues with sleeping have subsided for now. Still not sure what was causing the problem; but drinking a little bit of water and making a potty break during that time helped a little.
