Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Congested 1 week old...

So, my DD just started making little grunting noises off and on when breathing and when bfeeding she keeps stopping to breathe/grunt.  It almost sounds like she is clearing her throat.  She doesn't feel warm or seem upset by it, but I feel so bad because she is so little! I have her napping by the humidifier and it seems to be helping, but is there anything else I should do? Is it necessary to call the Doc? TIA for helping a new mom out!

Re: Congested 1 week old...

  • Preston was a week old when he got a cold (my DH was sick when I delivered) and we used Little Noses Saline drops to help keep him from getting too congested. If it keeps up then I would call the Dr or if she starts running a fever, mine did and he already has an ear infection. Hope she feels better soon!

  • Our pedi said all that is normal because newborns are still trying to get the hang of breathing, and also because their nasal passages are so tiny.
  • Poor Sophie! Sad

Unfortunately it doesn't get much better when they are older. DS always seems to sound congested. I took him in once when he was 3 months old and my pediatrician really said nothing.

Hey Mel! Yeah, I feel bad for her, but I guess it happens - it's making me all paranoid about who I bring her around...I don't want her to get a "real" cold yet - she's too little!

  • My LO does this exactly!  Our doula said it's mostly due to the milk (once the milk comes in, it's new for the baby) and my pedi said it's completely normal.  She said we could try some saline drops to help loosen anything up in her nose but not to suction unless we actually see something to suction.

Oh and both recommended a humidifier which we use now but I honestly don't see much difference.
