Recommend your baby monitor

Ok ladies. I originally was going to get a breast pump (which I really appreciate your suggestions!) but I think I want to do a little more research. The 15% off coupon expires on Sunday. My sister in law has this monitor..

and really likes it. It monitors the babies breathing and makes sure the baby stays on the mat. It sends out beeps if the baby's breathing isn't detected or if the baby totally moves off the mat. Does anyone else have this and like it? Any other recommendations? TIA!!

(Sorry, but I'm the first one on both sides of my family to have a baby and I only have a couple friends with babies. I really appreciate all the advice!)

Re: Recommend your baby monitor

  • I have it and love it! We got a lot of false alarms at first but you just have to play with the sensitivity setting a bit. If you follow the directions and get a piece of masonite board to put under the pad then you don't get as many false alarms and it doesn't alarm right when they roll off the pad. He is all over the place in his crib now, but having the board there kind of lengthens the pads reach or something.

We do also have a video monitor that we got as a gift however, and I really like that too! It's major overkill to have both, I do realize that...but they each serve a purpose for us and I really like them!

  • I have this monitor and it's great.  I actually have never used the sensor pad. It is set up and everything but I just felt that it was one more thing to worry about but the family that recommended it to me absolutely loves using their sensor pad.  I tested it out before the baby came and just felt like it wasn't for me.  It may be different for you.  What I really like about this monitor is that it's not one of those loud ones that is always on and the fact that it's wireless so you can carry it around with you all over the house.  The sound only turns on if it detects sound in the room.  It isn't a constant humming that is coming from the monitor.  The fact that it's wireless is great.  It comes with two receivers but I have found that I only really need the one because you can take it with you wherever.  I took it outside with me once when we were digging out of that December blizzard and it was really helpful.  I love this monitor even if it didn't have the sensor pad capability.
  • Congratulations! That monitor would have been a waste with my baby since she moved a ton in the crib and would have been off the mat in a second. We have a safety 1st digital/high def monitor and really like it. However, if I had it to do all over, I would have definitely gotten a video monitor. It would have been worth it for us and now would be fun to see her putting herself to sleep since she likes to talk/play with her animals before settling down.

  • We don't use a monitor, so feel free to take my advice with a grain of salt.  When DD was little we were in a really small house and we didn't need one.  I couldn't go anywhere that I couldn't hear her and she bunked in our room overnight so I was right there when she was really young.  DD would not have done well with the pad, she was a squirmy sleeper and was all over the place in her crib.  Now that we are in a house three times larger, for child number 2 (one day) I may buy a video monitor.  We used a friends when we were visiting and it is really neat.
  • We wouldn't have gotten much use out of it.  We had DS in our room in a bassinet for almost four months.  By the time we moved him to his crib at night, he could wiggle around and woud've never stayed in the proper place.  We had a $50 Sony wireless sound-activated monitor for DD that we liked for 18 months until it burned out.  So for DS, we got the Summer video monitor (after wishing we'd had one for DD as a baby) and think it's worth every penny...saves so many trips into his room to check on noises or crying and therefore us disturbing him (and therefore having to re-soothe and get him back down).  FYI, it's less expensive on Amazon than BRU.  We got a cheap audio one to put in DD's room now, and while it functions fine, it's not wireless and is always running (when we turn it on) - that constant humming a PP mentioned.  I probably wouldn't get it again.

  • We have the Summer Infant Handheld Video Monitor and *love* it.  I totally credit the video monitor with how great a sleeper she is and the fact that she learned to put herself back to sleep at night so quickly.  If she started to make any noise, I would turn on the video part of the monitor (instead of running right into her room) and could watch her instead of potentially disturbing her sleep.  Often, she was just making some noise in her sleep and I totally would have broken up her sleep if I had gone right in.

  • Forgot to say that we used the video one with DD a few months around when DS was born, and it was great because it grew with her.  We could see if she was climbing or standing in her new "big girl bed."  Plus, as a PP said, it was so much fun to watch her putting herself to sleep (or not, just hanging out) and playing with her stuffed animals.  I got a ton of entertainment out of it!g

  • We have the Summer Infant Handheld Monitor and love it.  It's been really helpful to see if DS is actually upset, or if he just needs a few moments to fall back asleep.  We're getting a second monitor for DD.
  • I don't know about the monitors that sense movement and breathing, but like PPs, I'm not sure DD would have stayed on the mat.

We have 2 monitors, actually. One is this Summer video monitor (a gift), which I really like for all the reasons listed above about them. I will say, though, that the monitor is big and because it's on my nightstand, throws a lot of light basically right to my face while I'm trying to sleep. Also, there's a weird big brother feeling I get sometimes about it. When do I stop using it? The neurotic part of me wants to use it for a long time, but there should be a point when I am no longer justified to watch my child all the time.

We also have this Graco monitor, which is what we use when we go to my parents or my ILs, since it's more portable.

I generally like both monitors and have had no problems with either. I think you have to be aware of things like interference if you live in an apartment or townhouse, and I think sometimes the phone can interfere depending on some technical thing I can't remember (gigahertz? I'm sure someone in any baby store can tell you).

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to show this to DH and we'll decide. I really appreciate all the input!
