F/U to artslvr's post

We are thinking of putting DD in a queen bed (which we already have) and putting it against the wall on 2 sides and then buying 2 side rails for the other 2 sides. The head and the right side would be against the wall. Is this too dangerous? Should we just get 4 rails?

I don't want to worry about DD's head getting caught b/w the wall and the mattress! She is a mover, never stays in one spot, even at just weeks old we'd find her in her crib, all the way down facing the wrong way!

she'll be about 18mo old when we move her (if it works, I am ready for it not to work and have to buy another crib).

  • We have a twin bed for DD #1 with a headboard and footboard, and then did two extra-long bedrails, one on each side.  The bed is against the wall.  I had thought about not putting a rail on the wall side, but decided that she'd likely fall in the crack.  Probably wouldnt' get hurt, but would scare her.  Worth it, to me, to just put up a bunch of rails and lock that thing down like Fort Knox.

She was 22 mos. when she went into that bed, and she moves around like crazy in her sleep.

  • I'm thinking of using the box spring and the mattress on the floor (per pedi's recommendation), without the rails on the bottom. Could I still attach the bed rails then?

My SIL did this with my nephew, and he still had bedrails -- his bed was in the middle of the room, not up against a wall..  I think the bedrails just kind of attach between the mattress and boxspring, but I'm not sure how.  I'm sure it's safe, though, as my SIL works for the AAP and is a safety guru!

  • maybe a better idea than a rail for each side is to take a pool noodle and put it inbetween the mattress and the sheet, this will provide a barrier so that shw won't fall into the crack between the bed and the wall.

We put DD in a twim bed and only used 1 rail (but she was 2.5 when we moved her so a little different).

Yes, I think so.  I'm at work, but when I go home I'll check and make sure.  DD's bed is a mattress on a platform (it's a captain's style bed, which was another reason to lock it down - it's high off the floor) - and i think the rails just go between the mattress and the platform, not attach to the actual bed.

  • Ah, bed rails.  We're in the midst of this right now.  We have DS in the bottom bunk of a bunk bed.  One side is against the wall, and we put up a bed rail there.  We also have a rail on the other side that opens to the floor.

Most bed rails are fine to use between a box spring and mattress.  You can actually buy a two-sided set  that connects in the middle with straps (you lay the hinged legs on the box spring, connect the straps, tighten, and then place the mattress on top).

My concern about placing rails all around is ensuring that you have sufficient space to ensure that her head isn't at risk of being entrapped.  According to the instructions on the one I just put up last night, you need at least 9 inches between the edge of the headboard/footboard and the bedrail.

  • Can you just start by putting the mattress on the floor?  That's what we're going to do (I also don't want to buy another crib) after reading too many horror stories about railings (and the stat that more children die from railing accidents than from falling out of bed).  But I freak out about random stuff, too.

yes, that's an option, but what will we do with the box spring? or did you mean box spring and mattress? I guess we could just put a lot of pillows around the bed in case she falls off

I'm telling you, pool noodle!!!  They are the miracle solution!
