conflicting advice on painting-

I'm planning on getting new floors before the baby comes, and looking at my options, I am pretty sure I am going to go with painted concrete. I live in a condo, and the existing floor under the carpet is concrete. I wanted ceramic tile, but I can get a similar look for much much less money with painted concrete. (I have 2 dogs and horrible dust allergies- I hate carpet!!!)

Well, I'm hoping to do as much of the work as possible, but obviously I won't be able to participate in any of the steps with noxious fumes. Can I paint with ANY types of paint? (wall, etc) Some sources say no paint exposure at all, some say household paint is ok. Which is true?

Re: conflicting advice on painting-

  • You can get low- or no- VOC paint, I'm not sure which brands, and it's more expensive than traditional paint, but no one should be breathing in paint fumes, pregnant or not, frankly.

  • If you decide to paint I would use a no/low VOC paint...I know both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have them available.

  • DH and I were planning the nursery before we found out that we were PG. So I was painting the walls very early in my PG. I did have the windows open and a mask on. I didn't however us that special paint that has less fumes, which I wish I would have used.

I think that if you use a mask, and the special paint (not sure what it is called but the paint store will know) you should be fine. And keep the windows open!

But I would also talk to your doc before you start anything!

  • If you use a paint with No VOC in it, in a well ventilated area you should be fine. We used one from Sherwin-Williams and it worked just fine.

  • I just feel (kinda) bad making my mom & aunt & sister do all the painting :-) I have to paint & cheaply renovate pretty much my ENTIRE condo, as it is not "baby-friendly". Kitchen, living area, bedroom... good thing I have 2 more trimesters to go...
  • We have a lot of painting to do too.  My doctor said to wait until the 2nd tri after the initial/major development.  He said make sure it is well ventilated and wear a mask.  In a few months it will also be warmer here so we can have all the windows open.

In his opinon, the paint fumes are no worse than the vehicle exhaust, smog, etc that you are breathing every day to begin with.
