I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but here goes...
I judge people who think formula is "expensive". It's anywhere between $15-25 a week-compared to "real" food that's CHEAP! Do people not realize that their child is older it's going to be even more expensive when they're eating "real" food, need new clothes and sneakers constantly since they outgrow/destroy theirs quick when they play, need lunch money everyday, money for field trips, etc. I dont get why people don't get their finances in order BEFORE they have kids-I think more than half our country lives paycheck to paycheck and I find that to be so sad. I know, it's a bad economy and some people lost their jobs/took a paycut but it still sickens me on how many people still havent learned and are still financially irresponsible. Flame away.
Re: My first (and last) FFFC here-it's not nice, you're warned.
No flaming. It's a Flame Free Friday confession
I think formula is expensive, but I feel the same way you do: it will only get worse, lol
But, on the other hand, I think it's easier to swallow a foor bill when you just go to the grocery store and pick up food for everyone to eat.
So true!
Seriously! We pay $50 for a bag of dog food that lasts a month and don't think twice of it. The dog has to eat and if she gets the cheap stuff it doesn't agree with her. She is like a child in so many ways.
Ditto others, but what you're saying assumes it's only the people living paycheck to paycheck who think it's expensive. My DH does very well and we can certainly afford it, but i still think it's expensive. I'm not outraged by it though, for the reasons you mentioned.
I do agree that people should be more financially responsible and not bring children into the world if they can't afford it. I don't think it's fair to the kid, and I think it's somewhat selfish b/c they want the experience of having a kid literally, at any cost.
I was just playin'
After 22 cycles and tube removal our IVF miracle has arrived! Detailed IF and IVF info in bio.
Holy crap that's a lot of food! I'll probably get flamed for this too, but why not try rice cereal? I know, not until 4+ months, but my son has been on it since 8 weeks (for reflux, so it's different since it's a medical need in my case) and he's still alive. I think after they're eating a certain amount of formula you're supposed to, but clearly your big boy needs more calories.
LOL! Before we had kids, we thought nothing of paying $50+ (or more) for a large bag of dog food for our dogs (lasted about 3 weeks). Too funny.....
this. they don't go through only one can a week for long!
I don't have anything to b!tch about yet today
I completely agree! I remember reading TTC boards on this and other websites and people would be complaining that they couldn't afford pregnancy tests or had to wait until their next paycheck to buy them! Ummm...I agree they aren't cheap, but if a <$20 test is breaking the bank, maybe now isn't the time to attempt to have a baby.
Are the comments to FFFC posts also flame free? lol
You're right, I probably chose my words wrong. When I meant "expensive" I meant difficult to afford. I don't see $100 a month (or less) as a bill as difficult to afford. Probably should have omitted that comment and stuck with my original point, which was that people who don't have their finances in order should delay having children.
I post on another board where a women was TTC, but couldn't afford the pg tests or OPKs. She wanted the free clinic to provide an SA for her DH because it was taking so long to get PG. My comment was maybe it was natures way of making sure they didn't have a baby they couldn't afford. Needless to say I don't post much anymore over there. She now brags about how much "free" she gets with WIC since she is pregnant.
It just irritates me to no end.
I'm in the same boat with ya. I have 3 dogs (and one is a standard poodle which she eats 4 cups a day) and wouldnt feed them the cheap stuff if they were giving it away for free. My pug is allergic to chicken and beef so we feed all 3 dogs a all natural food. Yes I might be a little weird when it comes down to my animals but I feel they are a part of our family. And next time people if u buy the "old roy" or the other cheap stuff you might want to look into what they make it out of.
because our tax money goes to people that can't afford their own things, thats why people get upset with topics like this... people say "why do you care if i'm on welfare??" and we say, "cus it's my money!" lol
I'm not sure I follow your logic. You pay a set amount of taxes and some of that money goes to social assistance programs. It's not like the government keeps coming back to you asking for more because "Jane Doe" wants to have a baby. And trust me, I am in the highest tax bracket and pay way more than my fair share of taxes. However, social assistance doesn't give you (or me or anyone) a right to dictate how people live their lives. That's not how the system works. That sounds closer to Communist China than America.
So do you think it's responsible to have a baby that you can't afford and expect the government to pick up the tab not only for insurance, but for formula and, later on, food (in the form of food stamps)?
Oh, I know, doll. You responded while I was typing.
I never even saw your response until now, lol
Not at all. I'm not debating that it's not responsible. My point is just that we can't legislate it. We're not going to require those on government assistance to take mandatory birth control. And I don't want to send a message to any child who was ever on government assistance that the child isn't valued and shouldn't have been born. Those social assistance programs are designed to ensure that every child has the opportunities that your child and my child have. I believe in those programs and I value those children. So I am not going to sit here and bash people for having children "they can't afford" because there's more to a child's life than whether their parents can foot the bill for their food.
Just a thought ladies... What about those babies who are birth control accidents? The only thing that's foolproof is abstinence... are you going to tell someone it's wrong to have sex AT ALL unless they are financially secure? And who is to say what is financially secure? Should there be a limit on who can reproduce? Say, only those that make over $50,000 a year? $75,000? Does that number increase with inflation? What happens if you are TTCing and get laid off? Should you have to abort? Give the baby up for adoption?
... Yeah, it may bother you that people aren't financially stable and bringing children into the world, but there's no real, responsible fix for that.. And as many people where I'm from say: If you wait until you're "ready" to have a baby, you'll never have one.
WOW...**slow clap**
I don't agree with that last statement. I waited until I was ready. I set basic financial goals that I wanted to meet before I even considered ttc like being debt free (besides a mortgage) and having at least 6 months of bills in an emergency fund. I would have rather had kids younger because I've wanted children for so long, but I did what was right and wanted to set that example for my child (ren).
In regards to "accidents" on birth control, if you use both condoms and birth control pills together religiously it's pretty much close to impossible to get pregnant, but I digress. However, when a couple does end up in that situation they have 2 choices. You find a way to make it work financially, or you take the easy way out and take a handout. Admittedly, I am an "oops" baby-my parents were both in their late teens was I was conceived. My dad got 3 jobs to make sure my family was taken care of. I'm not saying that you have to be rich or there should be any sort of income requirements, but I do think that you should be able to provide basic needs for your kids-food, clothing, and shelter on your own. I like that public assistance is there for families that have had something catastrophic happen unexpectedly, but the problem is public assistance is so overused and abused-BILLIONS of dollars are spent in welfare fraud alone. Imagine all the good we could do if there were less money spent unnecessarily in public assistance-we could improve our schools, improve our economy, pay off the national deficit, etc.
