WWYD? - Breech Baby

On Wednesday I had a growth ultrasound because of my GD.  My fundus is measuring at 39 weeks (I am about 36 wks and 3 days) and his weight is estimated at 8 lbs (!!!).  During the ultrasound we got the big suprise that he is breech.  His head is in my ribs, back on my left side, butt by my lady bits, and hands & feet on my right side (which explains why I only feel "kicks" & "jabs" on my right side).  Well my doctor is saying he would like me to try to get an external version.  I would have to go to labor & delivery, get medicine to relax the uterus and then try and move the baby on the outisde.  I have heard this is extremely painful & uncomfortable and the chances are only 50% of working (plus a 10% chance of him moving back).  If I don't go for that I would have a scheduled c-section.  My biggest problem with the version (besides the pain and the only half chance of it working) is my insurance.  It covers medicine well but when it comes to appointments it sucks horribly.  For my $600 ultrasound it covered $30.  no joke.  So I am assuming this version will cost a pretty penny and there is only a 50% chance of it working and having a c-section anyways.  Plus my husbands work barely let him off work for this past appointment so there isn't a good chance of him getting off for the version and a risk of it is they could force me into labor.  And of course I want him there especially if it turns into an unplanned c-section.  I guess I am just wondering what you guys would do in my position?  I feel a little guilty like I am taking the "easy way out" with just going right for the c-section.

Tried to post this with a clicky poll with the answers being 1) I would get a version 2) I would schedule the c-section 3) other (opinion below) but for some reason it wouldn't work.

Re: WWYD? - Breech Baby

  • Are they scheduling you for inducement and/or c-section soon because of the large size?  Or letting you go naturally?

Sometimes babies flip naturally.  I was JUST told a story by my coworker who was scheduled for the flipping procedure and her baby flipped the day before.  Another friend told me a couple weeks ago about actually having the procedure done.  It sounded uncomfortable, but not painful.

I guess if you are getting a scheduled inducement for size, I would go for the procedure the day before in hopes of a natural birth.  If it is looking like c-section is more probably, then I wouldn't bother.

    Good luck though!

  • My first baby was always breech (footling). We tried an external version for an hour and a half at 39 weeks and could never get her to turn. Ended up with a primary c-section. The version was not fun....even with the epidural. I am sure that I had some internal bruising with the version and was more sore higher up on my abdomen than I normally would have been with just the c-section. I don't regret trying. It just didn't work for me unfortunately.

I am now pregnant with my 2nd child and he is also breech. He is laying exactly like your baby.  I am 33 weeks and I know that he still has time to turn but...that is what everyone said about my daughter. I am not getting my hopes up and will not try the external version again. I am just scheduling a repeat c-section and if he turns in the meantime then great...I can try to VBAC.

I don't know why my children like the breech position because I have never been diagnosed with any uterine abnormalities.

I can understand your dilemma about the insurance. Is this your first baby? I think that the version is less effective with first babies. If they do the version and is doesn't work I am assuming they will just take you back and do the c-section on the same day? I don't think that I was charged a separate procedure since I ended up with a c-section the same day. But I guess every insurance is different. Good luck with your decision and wishing you a happy, healthy baby!

  • My son was breech. Since he was my first, my doc told me that he preferred the c-section option over the external version. He said it would be very painful for me and if it did work, the baby would probably flip back into that position anyway.

I haven't decided if I am going to try a VBAC yet for the second, but with all the other problems I've had, I'm sure I'll be having a repeat c-section which is fine with me.

  • Both my babies have been transverse (sideways) and I opted for the c-section.  My doctor said trying to flip the baby can cause stress and unnecessary stress on the baby's heart not to mention painful for me so I quickly opted not the do the version.  It's still early but this baby is still sideways and I have the c-section scheduled just in case since DD never flipped...  she also got her cord wrapped around her neck 4 times trying to flip down which is another potential danger.

    Good luck!
