1st Trimester

If you exercise regularly..

do you keep your heart rate low, like 140ish?  My OB told me I had to keep it at 140 or lower but I am finding that to be practically impossible.  I workout 4-5 times a week, running, walking, swimming, and lifting.  I don't follow all the OB rules super strict like I did with DS but didn't want to hurt the baby by working out too hard.  I also didn't know if this was just one of those rules they throw out there to scare you.  Anyone else???

Re: If you exercise regularly..

  • I don't wear a HR monitor and I haven't been checking my pulse. I was hoping to get a little feedback at my first appt in a month.

According to my Dr's website, whatever you did before you can continue now. Just use common sense and stop if something hurts.

  • I don't wear a heartrate monitor either.  Through my last pregnancy it was more that I had to be able to carry on a conversation.  Now, my exercise is generally not running, I walk at least an hour a day and 2 days a week I hike for at least 2-3 hours...

  • When I use the elliptical (which has a built-in HR monitor), I keep it under 140. Later in pregnancy, I'll do prenatal DVDs (loved them the first time around) and I'll stop if I feel winded or fatigued. Like PPs said, I think common sense is the best policy!

  • I know that is your Dr.'s advice and it is a good idea to follow your own Dr.'s advice; however, that advice is outdated.

ETA:  When I work out, I follow the "can I talk?" rule.    Pretty much, I just listen to my body and work out as long as I'm comfortable.   If there is a medical reason (other than being pregnant) to follow an under 140 rule, than you should probably definitely be following it!

  • My OB said I can continue with my usual routine.  I do zumba and I try to make sure that I can talk while doing it; sometimes I'll try to sing along with the songs.  My OB didn't say anything about keeping my heart rate at a certain number.

  • my doctor said to continue with my usual workout. I told her my heart rate gets to 180 or more, she said that's fine.
  • I made a simillar post yesterday. My OB said to keep my heart rate at 140, which is making the gym really boring for me. Some replied to me that this advice is out dated... but I'm too nervous to go against what doc said.  I've just been walking on an incline and doing a little bit of the weight machines.

This exactly. It is virtually impossible for me to keep my hr at 140. I listen to my body, drink lots of water and make sure I can talk.  I'm sure I sound like a loon talking through my whole workout. Big Smile
