How do you tell if baby is constipated?

How do you tell the difference between normal straining and constipation?

LO seemed to struggle today to do a poo. She seemd tobe  trying pretty hard at one point but nothing came out, but later on the day did a poo without any real effort.

So just curious how you tell.

    consistency  of the poo- my dd only poops every 4 days or so, but it's super runny

    So if it's more like paste? That's constipated?

    What do I do about it?

    my pedi told me I could give up to 4 ounces of water if I thought she was constipated, but I'm not sure if a paste consistency would be considered constipated...  bf or ff?

    She's BF. She's also very gassy and has been fussy the last few days.

    My little one was constipated a couple of weeks ago.  His poo looked pebbles...it actually reminded me of my miniature poodle's poo.  The doc said it should be smooth like apple butter. We had to switch our formula to similac sensitive and everything is running smoothly now.  If that doesn't work, the doc said to give him an ounce of apple juice with an ounce of water, or prune juice if the apple doesn't work.
