Multiples

1st OB appointment ?'s

I was released from my RE last week at 9 weeks.  When I was under their care I had 4 u/s which confirmed twin pg.

I had my first OB appt this morning and I was expecting them to use the doppler to listen for the hbs.  The OB said that they typically don't do early doppler readings (I'm 10 wks today) on twins because it is difficult to differentiate between the two hbs when they are so early in gestation.  Needless to say, I was disappointed. I have an u/s in 2 weeks, but I was hoping to hear the hbs today!  //stomps feet///

When did you have your first doppler?  Did you OB listen for the hbs at each appointment?  How often did you have u/s done?  I need some kind of reassurance at each appointment or else this is going to be a looong pregnancy.

TIA.

Re: 1st OB appointment ?'s

  • My OB never did dopplers to listen for the heartbeats in my twin pregnancy.  I did get u/s every 4 weeks.

  • My doc never uses doppler.  It is hard to differentiate the twins with a doppler so I think a lot of docs don't use it for twins.

I am seeing a MFM (also known as a Peri) only (no OB).  After being released from the RE, I waited 3 weeks for my first appt, which was the NT scan.  Then another 3 weeks until my next appointment, when I had a quick u/s for a cervical length check.  Two weeks later I had a Level II u/s, a bit earlier than usual due to some concerns on the NT scan.  Now  I am on a every 2 week schedule, alternating cervical length u/s and growth scans.  They are being very proactive because I have a history of 2nd trimester miscarriages.

If you really don't want to wait 2 weeks until your next appointment, think about buying/renting a doppler off the internet for home use. I know what it is like to hold your breath from appointment to appointment, so if it is going to drive you nuts, just get a doppler and save yourself some stress!

  • Congrats for being released from your RE, a big day, I hope you celebrate!!  My Peri never uses a doppler with multiples, he said it is too difficult and not accurate, he always does a quick u/s at each visit to check heartrates and fluid levels though.

  • My dr. tried for HB's at 10 weeks and couldn't find anything, then I had my NT scan at 12 weeks and found out it was twins! I then had an appointment at 16 weeks (she couldn't find one baby on the doppler) this freaked me out so I rented one. That only happned once though and my Dr has been able to find them each time since then. I have had 4 u/s so far, 12w, 20w, 30w and 32w....
  • I understand what you are saying completely!  I just bought a doppler online...and we check for our LOs heartbeats each night.  I stew between appts.  My RE was great and checked me/sono every 2 weeks....once I got to my OB she says 1/month.  Ugh.  it's awful waiting....as I have been down that miscarriage road too many times.  GL to you!
