OB Question

I'm normally on the First Tri board.  However, I'm new to the Valley region of CT, and work in New Milford.  Initially, we were going to get a place in Brookfield/Newtown (somewhere midpoint since SO works in Southbury).

Since finding out that we're expecting, we decided that it would be better in the long term to move to Ansonia, where his uncle owns a house we can rent for a lower rate (we we can save more!); as well as being close to his mum, who will be our daycare when I go back to work.

My OB is in Danbury, and naturally affiliated with Danbury Hospital.

My Question....

Since we're moving to Ansonia, it absolutely makes no sense whatsoever to keep our current OB (and I'm sad, since I love him, and I love D. Hospital!), and still try to deliver at Danbury.  It's quite a hike from Ansonia to Danbury.

Should we change OB's to someone affiliated with either St. Vincent's in Bridgeport, or Yale New Haven since it will be closer to home?  Or should we keep Danbury OB/Hospital since I work in New Milford, and then it will be closer...

I'm torn....

Re: OB Question

  • That's a tough decision.  Obviously having the OB near your work would be more convenient for all the appointments your going to have, especially near the end.  It's a 20 minute difference from Ansonia to Danbury vs New Haven.  I was induced because I was overdue so that wouldn't have been an issue for me in the end since we didn't have to rush to the hospital. However, I know several friends who were back and forth to the hospital 2 or 3 times in the last week of the pregnancy.  Plus if you do end up having to stay in the hospital (which you probably won't!!  Just saying..) it would be nice for home to be 20mins away as opposed to 40.  Have you asked your OB if he is affiliated with Yale New Haven at all?  My OB in Danbury told me that if they anticipated something wrong with the baby they would have me deliver at Yale.  So they have rights as doctors there.  Maybe you could work something out with your OB so that you could stick with them and deliver at Yale.  I don't know.  Like I said it's a tough decision and I'm probably not helping but I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

  • Only you know how comfortable you will be.  I have heard of people that love their dr. and stay with their ob, just deliver at a different  hospital with a different dr. (really they do not do that much anyway with an uncomplicated delivery).  If this is the way to go and you really want a familiar face with you as you deliver, you could hire a doula (we hired a doula because we do not like the practice, but were too nervous to switch mid-way through the pregnancy).  A doula is also great because they will come to the house and help you determine if you are really in labor, and if you are stay with you and help you to decide when to go to the hospital (I am hoping to stay home as long as possible).  One thing that I think you should consider though is how far each hospital REALLY is from you.  We are delivering at a hospital that is further away on paper, but the closer hospital could take up to 30 minutes to get to with traffic while the other hospital takes 10 minutes no matter what time of day.

I am not sure if that helps or not...It is a tough decision to make.  Good luck!

Yeah, those are good points...I do LOVE my OB and his entire practice.  Where are you delivering?  St. Mary's or Waterbury Hosp., or outside of Waterbury - I see that you're there...

My SIL delivered at St. Mary's last November, and they were absolutely horrid.  Her room was filthy, the nurses were biitches to her (although I do take that with a grain of salt - she tends to blow things out of proportion when people disagree with her and she thinks they just don't respect her..LOL) and her experience was just overall very messy and disorganized.

We talked some more last night, actually - I think we may stay with the current OB - we'll deal with the longer drive to Danbury Hospital from where will be - it will be easier if I go into labour while at work in New Milford - since I will be taken by a coworker most likely or have to wait for SO to get me - he works in Southbury...

  • I am actually delivering at Midstate in Meriden.  We live on the Cheshire side of Waterbury and on a busy day, it could take us up to 30 minutes to get to St. Mary's or Waterbury (plus my ob is out of Midstate).  It is also closer to where I work.

I know it can be a scary decision to make, but in reality, unless you are high risk, or have a family history of fast deliveries, you have a lot of time to get to the hospital.  One of my co-workers was in labor at work for 4 hours before she left for the hospital!

It seems like you have made the right decision!

  • hi,

have you considered Griffin hospital in derby? i just delivered there 3 months ago and had a good experience, its a small hospital but the staff was very nice Smile i live in oxford so it was the closest to me but if baby would be premature i would of had to go to bridgeport hospital.

my ob is in shelton they are very nice there and they all deliver at griffin if you want more info about them let me know. seems like if you'll live in ansonia this would be 5min away from you.

    congrats on your pregnancy!!!!

  • Hello and first of all, congrats!  That's a tough decision since you've got a drive no matter what, but I would recommend the shortest drive possible if you can manage it.  Driving + labor = not comfy!  We only had a 15 min drive or so and I was not a happy camper during it.  I delivered at Yale and had a fantastic experience there.  You might also want to consider the pediatrician/neonatal facilities available at each hospital, just in case.  I think Yale would be the best answer there, but it's worth looking into.
