Anyone have a "non traditional" Easter dinner?

We have hosted Easter last year and will again this year. Easter for some reason is one of the holiday's that not many family members can get together (a lot of them go down to Florida with there kids, etc.). So, I decided that when we host Easter we will have a theme. Last year it was Polish (all the food was Polish). This year it will be Italian.

We just get ham and turkey the rest of the holidays, thought it would be nice to have something "different" for a change.

Re: Anyone have a "non traditional" Easter dinner?

  • we usually do a brunch or lunch or BBQ of some sort with DH's parents and my Mom.

  • We do Greek food every year (we're not Greek).  I think it started b/c we always did a leg of lamb on the grill, and it grew from there.  So my sister makes spanikopita, we make a yogurt sauce for the lamb, etc.. It's yummy!
Here comes Baby #3! BabyFruit Ticker Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • Honeyed Ham with Pineapple was always traditional in my home when I was younger but I hate Ham so I normally make a Pot Roast. For my family that is "non traditional". I also make a Lemon Marange (sp?) pie. Yum yum.
  • When I was growing up we always went to my Grandma's and she cooked something different every year. The only tradition about it was that it was all homeade.

Since being married we trade off each year, his family then mine. So when we go to his parents, his mom ususally cooks a cassserole of some kind and Berries and bits for dessert. (every year)

  • Easter is the holiday we break out Russian food - my mom's heritage is Russian.  We have a spiral ham but add fresh kielabasa, pierogies, babka, etc.  LOVE Easter for that reason.  :)
  • I'm from Maryland and we always had crabcakes and baked potatoes growing up. Now I live elsewhere, but it's just not Easter without crabcakes!!
  • We're having Italian this year as well! Homemade sauce, lasagna, and chicken parm. Yum.

  • I prefer to have roast leg of lamb on easter, but that is not exactly non-traditional!!!
  • Yum....we do the traditional route but everything, everyone else is making sounds so good.  My family would be up for something non-traditional but DH's family is picky.  :(
  • i know this sounds really rednecky -but what do you expect, i live in south alabama! my extended family is very large - i'm one of eight, and my mother is also one of eight. soooo, we get together (and have my entire life, and before) in my uncle's cow pasture and grill hamburgers. we have so much fun! sometimes we play volleyball or softball or horseshoes. some people fish. a few of the men hide the eggs -about 300-400 (real ones), and then everyone hunts for the eggs, adults included. we wrap the "golden" eggs in tin foil and take up money for the prize. if this ever ends, i will be so sad- i would like for lo to experience this holiday the way i have.
  • i will start but saying, I LOVE FREAKING EASTER!!!!!! it is the best time of year!  i have no family down here.  i think my bro is coming over from pensecola for the weekend.  we will probably do something very non traditional.  there are a couple easter egg hunts in the area i would like to make it to. but other than that nothing to special.

can i also say you all sound like your celebrations are so much fun! hopefully someday i will have a family that gets together.

Doesn't sound red-necky to me.  Sounds like a lot of fun!!

  • bamababy: That sounds "different" and a load of fun. I'm always up for something new!
  • Well I'm sure it will change once the LO arrives, but for the past few years we haven't really celebrated Easter since DH's parents live in Oregon and mine are in Ohio.  He does have a brother and sister here but they usually do something with their SO's families that day.

We'll probably just go out to eat the day as there are lots of restaurants that are now open on Easter.

That doesn't sound red neck at all it actually sounds really fun. I come from a very proper European/British Family that was all about appearances and twiddling our pearls. Hamburgers would never have happened.

  • Last year my aunt hosted and we had a mexican themed meal. It was the best Easter dinner ever.
