Sleep walking.. should I be worried? (A little Long)

When J&J were about a month old I started waking my husband up at night searching for my son in our bed. Almost every night I wake up searching for him thinking that he is in bed with us, I've told my husband not to roll over on him, I've tried to roll my husband over thinking that he's laying on my son, etc. Neither one of them has ever slept in our bed with us because I have read too many horror stories. I usually wake up in the middle of a conversation with my husband and realize that, once again, I am talking in my sleep. (For example night before last I told my husband that our DS was in bed with us, he told me he was in the crib, so I told him our DD was in the bed with us, he said she was in the crib, I asked why the heck carseat was in bed with us, he said it wasn't, I wake up and realize that I have a pillow in my hands, not a carseat and tell him I'm going crazy and go back to sleep.)

Up untill last night this was just kind of annoyingly funny. But last night I woke up in front of the dresser with a drawer pulled out feeling around for my son, who I thought I had put down in the dresser drawer. Obviously he was in the crib, not the dresser drawer.

1- It weirds me out that I am almost always looking for our son, and not my daughter. My daughter is a little more independent, but I don't think I favor him over her?

2- If I'm actually getting out of bed without realizing it, it scares me that I could hurt them somehow... (Example-start doing chest compressions because I think one of them isn't breathing??) I'm not normally a worrier, and I'm pretty laid back, but this is starting to scare me a little bit, shoud I go to the doctor??

  • I would call the doctor with your concerns, absolutely.

  • So all of the sleepwalking started a month ago?  Did you ever have it before the babies were born?

I remember searching for my first son in bed when he was just a few weeks old.  Obviously he was in his crib, but for some reason I thought he was in the bed with us.  I even grabbed a pillow thinking it was him once.  It only happened to me on and off for maybe a month?  And hasn't happened since.  Not even with the twins.

Are you taking any medications?  I know that some (especially sleep meds) can make you have kind of a 'twilight sleep' where you do things in your sleep, and some can even make you see things that arent there.

I personally would just mention it to your doctor, maybe you aren't getting enough sleep or enough good quality sleep.

And I don't think its that you are favoring your son, its just something sub conscious.  THere may be no reason that you think he is in bed, more than her.

  • It actually started when they were a month old, so I've been doing this for about 3 months now, and I used to do it a couple times a week, but now it's every night I sleep in the bed. I don't do it when I'm on the couch (or maybe I do, but I don't wake my husband up so I don't know about it!)

I don't take any medications, and really haven't ever taken anything more than antibiotics when I'm sick.

  • I would mention it to your doctor since it has been going on for a while and is increasing in frequency.

Ditto. Definitely bring it up to your doc. That's a lot of anxiety you've got going on in your sleep! :(

  • I would call the doctor.  It could be lack of sleep or lack of quality sleep that is causing you to sleep walk, but it would really scare me for the same reason that you expressed concern over.

I agree.  Not to mention the fact that it's effecting your husband too.  He'd probably like a solid night's sleep without a third person waking him up. Smile

  • I agree with the PPs about calling your doctor, but wanted to add, don't worry for a second that the fact that you're dreaming about your son means that you're "favoring" him.  You may subconsciously be more woried about him as the weaker of the two or something, but I don't think that's anything to think twice about for a second.

I have done my fair share of sleepwalking; it's usually stress-induced.  Your doctor may be able to give you an anti-anxiety medication that will help.
