Swing and a bouncy seat? Are both necessary?

Do you have and use both of these things? Opinions on one vs the other?

I'm currently registered for the Fisher Price Little Lamb Swing and was thinking about getting a bouncy seat too, but is the swing enough? Maybe a bouncy seat for upstairs/in my bathroom?

Thanks!

Re: Swing and a bouncy seat? Are both necessary?

  • I have both and use both but they're not necessary.  My DD loves her swing and the first few weeks would sleep in nothing but her bouncy seat but now doesn't use it much.

We started out with just the bouncy seat. At about 3 wks we caved and got the swing bc he was pretty much only napping in my arms... love the swing. No longer use the bouncy seat.
  • We love our Little Lamb swing. My LO loves to just hang out in it and will also nap in it, so I consider it a must. We also have a bouncy seat, that I use as a more portable seat for showers and such. It is nice to have both, but if I had to choose 1 then the lamb swing for sure!

  • They're not both completely needed, but we like having both! DD loves both for different reasons. She doesn't sleep in her bouncer but loves to snap in her swing. But while I shower she loves her bouncer! she loves talking to it!

  • We have both, but honestly only use the swing. He has used his bouncy seat once. I like having it though just in case no one is home and I need to shower, I'll just put him in it and take it to the bathroom with me while I shower.

  • It really depends on what your LO likes.  The bouncy seat is a must for me.  I put DS in it every day when I shower, he sits on the bathroom floor so I can hear him cry.  He doesn't like the swing when it is on, but loves to sit in it and watch the mobile and listen to the music.  The one thing that really is a must for me now is his play mat.  He plays on that every day for a couple hours (spread out through out the day) and absolutely loves it.
  • I use both, sometimes its the only way I can get stuff done!
  • We use both.  The swing is on the main level of the house and we bring the bouncer around the house with us.

  • I would recommend the Fisher Price Zen Collection swing. The seat comes off and doubles as a bouncer. LO LOVES it. When she falls asleep in the swing I just lift the seat out and bring her in the bathroom while I shower. Its great.

  • I'd register for both, and if you get them, great and if not, buy the items used. My son never liked his swing all that much and prefers the bouncy seat. It's not fun to invest a good amount of money in something they use for such a short time and may not even like. If you dont get the items in your shower, hold off, have your baby try the item at a friends house (hopefully you have a friend who has/had a baby) and you can see if your child likes it and is worth the investment.

  • I would die without both. I have the FP infant to toddler rocker - its the best - LO sleeps in it and likes to just hang out in it - like PP's said, I can carry it around with me, in the bathroom, on the island in the kitchen, on the floor - anywhere.  The swing is good when he's fussy.

  • Having both are nice since you don't know what your LO will like.  They are all so different.

My DS has to be in the right mood at this point to like the swing but it's the first thing DH uses if he needs to set him down to get stuff done. He is just now getting to the point where he focuses on the mobile part of it.

Our bouncy seat is a requirement in our house.  DS sits in the seat on the kitchen table during meals and when I'm getting cleaning done in the downstairs.  And it's what I'll end up using to take showers if I can't get them in before DH leaves for work.

Like PP said, register for both.  We got lucky and got our swing at a second hand baby store.  Otherwise, we might not have gotten it.  If you get one, get the bouncer first since it's cheaper and easier to move from room to room.  You can always invest in the swing if needed later.

  • I have both and used both until my maternity leave ended. Now that DS is big enough for his Bumbo seat, we rarely use his bouncy seat.

When I was on mat. leave I would use the bouncy seat in the bathroom when I was taking a shower, or sometimes I'd bring his bouncy seat into the room where our treadmill was when I was working out.

I'd say a bouncy seat is a good idea until they're about 3 months old. The bumbo is just as "portable" and my DS likes it a lot better. He loves sitting up!
