Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Which baby carrier would you recommend? :)

Hey ladies! So, I am so confused by all the reviews and research I've read on baby carriers. So, many different styles to choose from! I am on the short side 5'3, and have back issues from time to time. So I am looking for something with support, that will also fit at different stages of infancy. Thanks! :)

  • The ERGO is great. We got it from amazon.com

  • I have been reading about this one! Thanks!!! It is good to hear positive feedback about it! :)

  • I have a pouch sling that I love for newborns up to toddler.  I also have a Moby that is great because it is totally hands free.  I can do anything while wearing LO.

I just ordered Mei Tai carrier to see if I like it.  I wanted something that was a little less fabric than the Moby (I live in Phoenix with temperatures in the 110s in the summer).

  • I have a moby, maya & baby bjorn.

Moby: LOVE it! Great to wear around the house and get things done. Weight evenly distributed across your back. DD loves it. Only potential negative is that it gets HOT! Also, it takes a bit of time to put it on in the beginning, but gets easier with practice.

Maya: Great for short outings (grocery store, etc). I think I'll get more use out of this as she gets older.

Baby Bjorn: Haven't used yet because she looks so little in it!

  • I'm loving the moby.  I also have a beco and am sure I'll love that in another month or two
  • I really want an Ergo or Beco (or both... I think I'm addicted to baby wearing!). If you have one, where did you buy it?
  • Love my Ergo!

  • I just read an article today on msn.com that is studying baby carriers.  Any carrier that holds your infant with it's chin bent forward towards the chest carries a risk of suffocation.  The sling type carrier and the moby wrapped in a sling position have caused 6 newborn deaths since they started their study 2 years ago.

I didn't use a carrier until over 3 mos just because I was afraid of those risks but I lived in the baby bjorn once my DS was 4 mos.  My DD hates it.  Mobys drive me crazy- too much fabric.

  • I'm a bit of a BW junkie and have quite a stash. (Moby, bjorn, kozy, ergo, Oh snap!, maya warp, maya tie, peanut shell and a beco on the way.)

For a tiny babe my favorite is the moby. It takes a few tries to get the hang of it, but it is brilliant when you do. G is a  porker at 15lbs and still cozy and perfect in there. Plus at $39 retail you really can't go wrong with a moby!

I hated the bjorn and didn't like the way he hung from it. I also hate the peanut shell. I was professionally sized, so I know it is the right one for me - but neither of us can get comfortable in it.

I did try him in the ergo, but he hates to have his legs 'froggied' so even with the insert it didn't fit him right. We'll have to wait until he is a littel bigger and can spread his legs before he can ride in there. But - I love the ergo! My almost four year old still rides in the ergo comfotably.

(If it came down to Bjorn or Ergo - go Ergo no question. Not only is it so much more comfortable for both of you - but they are right around the same cost wise and you can use the Ergo so much longer!

The Oh Snap! is nice, but it is for babes 6 months and up only.

I love a mai tie. (Kozy and maya tie) and you can put a small baby in them, but thier legs will have to be 'froggied' and not all babies tolerate that. They are super useful as baby gets older though!

A ring sling (like the maya) is an all around great carrier. You can do a pouch-like cradle carry, an upright newborn carry and I love, love, love a hip carry with a 6+ month old.

Baby carriers are a lot like clothes in that they all have a different 'fit'. Some carriers just don't fit some body types. (even the super versitile ones) I cant get comfortable with the kozy even though you tie your own straps but my H and BF swear by them.

My best advice would be to go with a moby to start and then take baby at a few months old to a babywearing meeting and try a bunch of different things until you find what really fits the both of you.

Also, check out the baby wearer. ( www.thebabywearer.com ) not only are they a plethora of great advice, but the FSOT forum is filled with great steals! I remember seeing brand new mobys for $32 shipped a few weeks ago.

    good luck!
