Pregnant after 35

First trimester results...should I worry?

Received the results yesterday of the first trimester screening, and I went from 1 in 142 for my age to 1 in 116 for Downs.  The other one went to 1 in 3000, so that one was good.  Should I worry?  Anybody else have the odds go up and still have a healthy baby?

Please help, I'm quite nervous....Embarrassed

Thanks!

Katie

Re: First trimester results...should I worry?

  • My results were 1 in 3.  I had a healthy baby.  I have a friend whose where 1 in 600.  She did not.  Someone will always be the 1.  I would consider the CVS or amnio.  I think my friend, whose son is 12 weeks old, would tell you it would have been a lot less stressful to have known much earlier.  This is especially true if you work or need childcare, since there are often additional needs that require more time off for Dr and some daycares are just not a good fit for children who require extra care.

  • I had excellent results but at 39 I opted for an amnio. I am a need to know person. I agree with pp that someone is the 1..GL
  • CVS or amnio is really the only way to know for sure. If you think you will worry yourself sick, I think either one would be a great idea for you to do.

Another way to look at this is that you are at a 1.16% risk for Downs.  Do what feels right for you.  I did not go for an amino or the CVS but if you think that you will worry yourself sick, go for it.

  • With my first, I was given a 1 in 81 chance due to a soft marker on my level 2 ultrasound.  I chose not to have any additional testing.  It was stressful, but I chose to trust that any situation that was predetermined wasn't something that I couldn't handle.

My son was born perfectly healthy.

I hope you find some peace of mind soon.

  • Before we did the 1st tri screening, DH & I agreed that 1:100 was our cutoff for doing additional testing, never thinking it would be an issue.  My results back 1:4 for Downs syndrome based on both soft markers on the u/s and high hcg levels.  We opted for an amnio which showed chromosomally normal.   The tests aren't necessarily accurate and do cause alot of anxiety.  For us, the knowing early on has put everything in perspective since then and made the pregnancy ups and downs alot easier to handle.

Actually 1 in 116 equates to less than a 1% chance (technically 0.86%).

  • like the pp said, even if your odds are 1 in 600 - you can be that 1. i'm definately a need-to-know person and skipping any pre-screening tests and going straight to cvs as soon as  i hit 11 weeks! knowing real information and not just odds is my choice hands down. some people don't think it's worth the risk of complications (due to invasive testing), but it is worth it to me. it's all totally individual, do what makes you stress out less is what i say.
  • Thanks to everyone!  I think I've just decided to relax a bit, and not stress over something that I cannot control.  DH and I will be fine no matter what happens, and it will be meant to be.  I don't think that it will stop the worrying, but hopefully, it will be worry that the normal mom would be doing.  We head for the second screening in a couple of weeks.  If the results come back worse, I'm not sure if we will even do the amnio or not.  I am going to take it one day at a time.

    Thanks again!
