Boston Babies

Cambridge Health Alliance?

Hi ladies- I'm mostly a lurker on this board, but relatively active over on the Boston Nest, and I had a question better suited to this board.

I'm a planner, and sometimes over-plan things, I just like to know what I'm getting into.  I have various conditions which will make it difficult for me to conceive on my own, and was told by my doctor to make an ob/gyn appt about a month or so before I wanted to TTC, to discuss my options and run any necessary tests.  I then moved across the country, and had to find a new doctor...

I was hoping to talk to my doctor in March so that we could begin TTC in late April, early May, so I recently did a little research and chose Cambridge Hospital (part of Cambridge Health Alliance) because it's convenient to me, and has a new maternity ward, and because in general, I liked what I saw.  Mass General is the other option, but they are such a huge hospital, and I read that lots of people didn't like it there.  So I picked out an ob/gyn, and called to get an appointment, but they can't see new patients until late May/early June?!

Is this common?  Should I just be patient and wait my turn for an appointment, or are they giving me the runaround and I should look at MGH instead?  I mean, I understand if that's actually just how it works, but if this is a hint of problems to come down the road, then I'd rather just skip it and find somewhere else to go.  I hate changing doctors, doctors in general make me nervous, so I'd like to just find one and stick with her.

Does anyone have any experience with CHA, or with MGH?

TIA, and sorry for the long post.

Re: Cambridge Health Alliance?

  • I've known a few people with MGH experiences and they are split on their care. Some liked some didn't. As for Cambridge I can't speak to them as I've never been except for a small ER visit many years ago. I think what you are hearing is a little extreme, but I've not been a new patient in any practice for quite some time. I do know it is normal to have to wait weeks out, but not sure if a couple of months is appropriate.

  • It wouldn;t hurt to call, but when I was pregnant with my son when I first called the OB after getting a positive I went in at 7 weeks and all they did was go over paperwork. they don't even look at you intil week 10 which is stupid IMO. I have a new OB/GYN now so hopefully things will be better the next time around.

  • I have some experience with the Cambridge Birth Center and Cambridge Hospital. I was being seen at the Birth Center, but when I m/c I went over to Cambridge Hospital to have an ultrasound.  Other than a slightly abrasive ultrasound technician (long story.. I can PM you if you'd like), everything else was fine at the hospital. The midwives at the birth center that saw me when I m/c were incredible. They were warm, sensitive, and knowledgeable. I would make the appointment with Cambridge Hospital (or check out the Birth Center) if you really feel like that's where you want to receive your care, but in the meantime, maybe make an appointment now in March with someone else so that you know that everything is in order to start TTC. I'd start taking prenatals now, also, even before any appts.
