Are they trying to break the bank? $100+ for recital tickets!

I just bought tickets for DD1's spring recital. I cannot believe how expensive they are! I actually have to buy DD a ticket! Not only do I have to pay for costume, recital fee, new tights, but I also have to pay for her to  get into her own recital? Absurd. It's reserved seating, so I have to go ahead and buy tickets for family/friends who want to attend. I hope everyone pays me back. The tab for DH, DDs, my mom and myself was $110. If I buy all 12 tickets that we need for everyone else, I'll be in for well over $200. We're done with ballet for now since DD wants to do gymnastics next year. It's so freaking expensive!

  • that's so stupid.  I can see charging a fee to guests.. but the child???  dd's gymnastics tried the same thing... $110 for dd to register and the outfit... then it's something like $12 a person for tickets????  we're not doing it.  she's 4.  and she is shy .  not gonna torture her.

  • WTF?!  You have to buy her a ticket to dance in her own recital plus a recital fee?  I'd be having myself a good little hissy fit...the whole thing is beyond absurd.

  • I'm still stuck back on having to pay anything to attend your DD's recital, much less hundreds of dollars (and seriously, having to buy DD a ticket is ridiculous!)

I'm now having a "back in my day, when I was in ballet..." old-person moment ("We didn't have to buy tickets!  The recital was supposed to be a fun time for families to see what their child has learned, not to make money!  Yada Yada!"

    UGH!

I agree. I took ballet for 15 years, and I never had to pay a recital fee or to get into the recital. I  feel taken advantage of. I feel like they're charging as much as they can get away with. I'm so glad that we'll be done with this soon.

  • That is CRAZY, especially that you have to buy a ticket for her!  Won't she be performing and not even sitting in the audience?  Why on earth do you have to buy her a ticket!?!?  Insanity.

  • Wow!  DD's whole dance class, including recital is only $56 for 8 classes (she goes all year, but it has been $8 per time except this last session where you have to pay up front.)  The $8 per time has been great because we end up missing about every 3rd class, since someone is sick or we have something else we have to do.
  • It is friggin' highway robbery.  We have to pay monthly fees, despite the fact that sometimes, the teacher doesn't come or is late, and they have a HIGH SCHOOLER as a stand-in (admittedly, she is on her way to becoming a professional dancer, but still).  We had a choice of not letting her be in the recital, but yeah, like we were going to break her heart that way, so we had to pay recital and costume fee, and yes tickets for everyone.  So get this, we are REQUIRED to buy 6 tickets minimum, so they can be sure to "encourage a large, supportive audience."  Whatever.

The monthly fee is actually quite reasonable, and it is a professional ballet center, so that, to me, is worth it.  I can do without the recital cost, though. $160 for a costume she's going to be wearing for 5 minutes, max.  HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

  • My DD is in dance, and we did have to buy her costume for the recital.  They wear the same one for the ballet and tap portion (it makes it easier for little kids to not have to get changed).  We will have to buy tickets as well, not for DD but for ourselves and family that want to attend.  It's not assigned seating so if we don't get them together it's not a big deal.   The tickets are also really inexpensive.  If it was going to costs hundreds of dollars for the show I'd be bent.
