WIC

So I have my first appointment with WIC tomorrow and im nervous! I dont like asking for help but I understand that I need some type of help.I dont know how much I qualify for if I even qualify for anything, im not getting any cs and I make around $500 every two weeks. Im currently only nursing which they already told me that they will not offer me any formula so I wont feel pressured to stop nursing. What are good questions to ask? What should I expect? I know that they help out with food, do they help with anything else? What should I ask them, I have my own list of questions but I dont want to ask questions about things that they dont offer or help with.

Thanks in advance

Re: WIC

  • First off, they would NOT pressure you to stop nursing, if anything, they will encourage that you nurse as long as possible with the understanding that not everyone can go on as long as the next person.

Second, I'm not sure really that there are any questions to ask them... basically they will do the asking (about your diet and what not), then they will present a few facts about nutrition, then they'll print you vouchers for food for yourself.  Once you stop nursing, the food for you will stop and they will give you vouchers for formula and baby food (depending on what stage the baby is at).

Nothing to be nervous about!  :)  Even people who work are on WIC at times when they need it!

  • Oh... and as far as helping with anything else... they don't but they may have resources to direct you to.
  • WIC will encourage you to keep nursing. They will make sure you, as your child's milk provider, have food. I think milk, eggs, cheese, and fresh fruit/veggies. When your child hits 6 months, they'll start to cover solid foods (rice cereal, juice, baby food).

  • While I am not on WIC, I was when I had DD#1 because she needed to be on a special formula that was $25 a can.  I collected the "vouchers" for one month but never used them because DD#1 was switched to an even more expensive formula ($32 for a small can) but thankfully, it was covered by insurance.  If you need support, then take it.  Just don't live by the mindset that government aid is the way to live.  Use it for the time you need it and then get off of it.  Don't abuse it.

This.  And I fully understand feeling guilty about taking assistance.  I used to look down my nose at people on WIC and now I am on it Tongue Tied.  You will have to have sort of a nutrition consultation and they will likely weigh and measure LO.  You get vouchers each month for healthy foods.  In CA they have veggies and then milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, lentils, wheat bread, 100% juice, etc.  Then once DS turned 6 months I got vouchers for his food.  It is a ton of baby food and you get three boxes of cereal a month I believe.

It takes some getting used to to get familiar with what you can actually purchase.  Certain things are really specific like you need to get 16 oz blocks of cheese versus two 8 ounce blocks.  Make sure you have extra time when you go because it takes longer, especially the first time.  Also, be warned that sometimes customers are rude and roll their eyes, as do the grocery checkers.  It can be embarassing, and humbling.

As far as BF, they will encourage you to keep it up, at least for a year and will explain the benefits of it if you want them to.

     GL!

  • They will tell you what you can get. I received WIC with my first child because he was not gaining weight while breast feeding. I was forced to feed him formal or they said they would take him away. I was young 19 and did not know better so I got it a feed him until he would throw up until he gained his weight back. I would not do it again but I was young and scared. He still is underweight at 17 and always had been. He is 6'2 and 110 pounds and very active.
  • just thought I'd let you know you ought to qualify, I gross about $1900 per month and I do. here in MO they wont even make an appointment with you if you dont qualify (when you call them they ask how much you make.) also, my lady advised me to put DD on medicaid since I'm paying for private insurance right now. she said I should qualify based on the fact that I qualify for WIC. I will find out next week hopefully..
