1) When and why?
2) How did it go? (I don't need a full birth story, but was it relatively successful or did more complications arise and things didn't go as planned)
3) Did you have any progress on your own prior to?
My bp is rising and swelling is increasing, which are starting to cause some concerns about pre-e and doc is willing to induce me at 39 w 3 d. I'd like this baby to come on her own, but if its going to cause health issues for me and/or her, maybe its better to induce before things get worse. I'm 3.5 cm dilated and 80% effaced, but seem to have stalled since last week. I know though I could still go any time now....and I hope I do.

Re: Were you induced?
1. With Meredith at 37w3d because I had high bp and sporadic protein in my urine. Meredith had an umbilical vein varix, which can cause sudden fetal death after 38 weeks.
2. From the first dose of misoprostol to her birth was just over 25 hours. I had an epidural after 8 hours. It was very slow-going until about 4 cm, and then it went really fast after that. In fact, the doctor was doing a c-section and didn't get back in time to deliver Meredith. The nurse-midwife handled the delivery instead. By the time the doctor came in, the head was out and the cord was off of her neck, and the midwife shooed him away.
3. None whatsoever.
With Alex, I walked around for WEEKS at 3 cm, 80% effaced! My water broke 2 days before my due date, and he was born 3 hours later. I had no BP issues with that pregnancy though.
Meredith, 6-1-06 and Alex, 11-5-09
40 wks excatly/ pre pre- e dr was concerned
it went as expected but I was not ready to be induced.
I had no progress at all so I had to go in the night befor for the cerivdil> But you may not need that since you are already 3 cm.
if you want to go on your own I would try some of the natural things to jump start your labor. Eat mexican food, sex, nipple stimulation, walking those kind of things.
I've tried! What's funny is in between two appointments, I've done more of the above and had less progress than the check before when I didn't kick the "natural" stuff into gear yet. ::shakes fist at body::

My TTC/PG blog / Panda Phenomenon Explained
1) When and why? At 38 weeks. I have diabetes (pre-existing, not gestational). The current recommendations is for babies to be delivered between 38 - 39 weeks because diabetic placentas age faster. Some OBs differ on this but many will still opt for the 38-39 week rule.
2) How did it go? Meh. I wasn't a good candidate, IMO. I was only 1 cm and about 50% effaced. I think I would have done better had I insisted on waiting a week, but by that time I was so ready to have him out, I didn't push it. I went in for Cervidil the night before, then the next morning they broke my water and started pit. I dilated to 6cm and then got stuck (for 5 hours.) By the 20 hour labor mark, I was done. DS was born by c-section.
3) Did you have any progress on your own prior to? A little bit. In retrospect, I wished I had either a) waited a week to see if I would progress more or b) just had a scheduled c-section to begin with.
I was induced at 38 weeks due to oligohydramnios. I had no progress. I went in the night before for cervidil. By the next morning, still no progress. They started pitocin and DD was born 5 1/2 hours later. Once they started the pitocin, I went fast.
I had no complications at all. For me being induced was the right thing because my fluid volume was so low. When the doctor broke my water, hardly anything came out, no big gush, just a little trickle.
1. at 39 wks & 3 days b/c my blood pressure had been on the rise.
2. I didn't progress beyond 1.5 cm after 12 hours on pitocin...and it wasn't looking likely that I would. So, I ended up with a c-section. It was fine, I was prepared for the possibility of a c-section with my induction, so I'd made peace with it already.
3. I really had very little progress before. I was about 1 cm when I went in. Evidently baby boy was lodged in my pelvis in a way that preventing him from dropping. I suppose if I'd not been induced it would have been possible that would move on his own given time, but who knows.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
1. 36 weeks, PIH/pre-e
2/3. generally ok. 30 hours total labor, but I went in at maybe 1cm since it was so early and I didn't really progress until they broke my water. From water breaking to birth = less than 12 hours. We had complications with Ocho since I had been on the magnesium for a good day and a half before she was born, but no problems with L&D at all.
Here's some :::low BP/swelling dust:: for you!
1. Yes, 40w2d. I was induced because I had only 8 wk of maternity leave and didn't want to spend 2 of the weeks hanging around. I had very little progress but was having lots of contractions and the Dr estimated that my son was about 9 lb (they were way off - he was only 7.11).
2. It went great. No complications whatsoever.
Short birth story: We checked in the night before, they inserted cytotec (which I later found out is not a good option - there are far too many risks with this drug - if I had to be induced again I would choose cervadil - you may not need either since you are already 3cm).
They started pitocin the next am at 6:45, broke my water at 9:15 (immediate pain). I got the epidural at 10AM. Was fully dialated and effeced at 3:30 but had to wait for baby to drop. Started pushing at 5:30, DS was born at 6:30.
The whole thing went relatively smoothly.
I had no problem being induced and would do it again, if necessary, although next time I plan on being more patient and seeing if the baby will come on his/her own because I want to experience the excitement of letting the baby come on his/her own and avoid the cervadil/pitocin if necessary.
3. Not really - that's why I decided to go for the induction. I was only a fingertip dialated and barely effaced (I don't remember the amt) so I didn't want to waste my maternity leave waiting for the baby to come. I wanted to have the baby so I could spend as much time with him as possible before going back to work (I had 8 wks total).
Good luck!
1. 40w6d due to low amniotic fluid.
2. It went very well--no complications at all. They started the pitocin around 8:30, didn't feel anything until around 10-ish, try to go it med-free until around 4:00, got an epi around 4:30, started pushing at 5:45, had DS at 6:00.
3. I had been sitting at 3 cm for a week at that point, so that helped things along as well.
:-)
I think you know my stories but thought I'd post anyway.
1) When and why? DD #1: 41 w, 2 d. Induced for no reason other than I was majorly overdue and had ZERO progress. Could have kept waiting if I wanted to. DD #2: 40 w, 2 d. Induced so I could make sure to have my aunt deliver before she went on Spring Break. Had minimal progress (1 cm).
2) How did it go? DD #1 - Went beautifully. Would do that labor & delivery 100 times over. DD #2 - You know how that went!! But the complications really had nothing to do with being induced.
3) Did you have any progress on your own prior to? (See #1 above.)
I think with all the progress you've made on your own and considering the rising BP and swelling, I would go ahead and induce!!!
1) When and why? 41 weeks, because I was overdue
2) How did it go? Very well. Cervadil started mild contractions, pitocin got 'em going, progressed to 9cm by 3:00pm. Ended up with a c/s because she was breech, nothing to do with the induction.
3) Did you have any progress on your own prior to? I was 1cm and 75%, I think? So basically, no.
1. 39wks 1 day, for PIH
2. I was 3cm, 80% when I was admitted and having mild contrax on my own 6-10 mins apart. Pitocin contrax sucked but were manageable but once they broke my water contrax kicked my ass! I asked for the epi less than an hour after my water broke. If the epi hadn't failed, I would have had a much better experience I think. But because I was looking for and waiting for pain relief that didn't happen, I was pretty stressed and emotional and crazy. Pushed for 3.5 hrs, but baby was born happy and healthy and perfectly beautiful.
The epi failing had nothing to do with the pit, and who knows if the 3.5 hrs pushing were related to inducing before my body was ready. ::shrugs:: I am not anti-induction after all that.
3. Already answered.
Good luck!!!
The O'Baby Blog
1) Because I was over due AND I didn't want to wait until Christmas...
2) Wonderful! Pit at 6:30am, she was born at 9:27am
3) Just a little, the L&D nurse said my doctor was being generous when she told me I was 3cm. She was "pretty low" though.
You can totally have an induction with your stats and have it go easy! Don't be afraid
1) I was induced with my 2nd b/c I was in a extreme amount of pelvic pain and b/c he was growing so fast. (he was 8lbs 11 oz 1 week early)
2) I would say it went well. The induction started at about 7ish and I had him by 4:28pm. I think it would have gone faster had he not been stuck on my pelvic bone.Which is why it was hurting so bad..(he actually had a bruise on his head from being stuck). I guess that is why I stalled. I had my first with no induction and it did go faster(5 hour labor). I would do the induction again in the same situation.
3) I was 2-3 cm dilated and 80% effaced too.
I am sure it will go so fast if you end up induced with that much progress already!
I almost had to be induced, but managed to go into labor on my own, having made ZERO progress by 41 weeks 2 days.
I can't offer induction advice other than if you have to be induced, it sounds like with the progress you've already made you are a very favorable candidate for a positive induction. GL!
2. Dilated to 2 cm/50%+ effaced. unsuccessful induction. did not respond, contractions never became regular or strong. DD's head was high, when water broke cord prolapsed. Emergency c-section.
My advice - DO NOT break water until head is engaged! Very scary. DH did not get to be present for his only child's birth and I was not able to be awake.
2. It went perfectly, Caroline was born 10 hours later vaginally
3. I was 2.5cm and 70% effaced when I left my 37 week appt. I went to work and my water broke 2 hours later. So, yes, I had progress.
Lots of labor dust!!!
The Blog
I was induced at 38 weeks 1 day because of high BP and protein in my urine (I think I had mild pre-e). I was only 1 cm dilated and partially effaced. I was worried about being induced because I'd heard it makes things a lot more intense. However, my induction went off without a hitch and the pain was actually pretty minimal. I went in on Monday night and had something inserted in my vajayjay to ripen my cervix and the next morning, they started Pitocin. The doc broke my water a few hours later and, though I wasn't feeling any pain (I don't even think I was feeling the contractions), I went ahead and got the epi around 11 or 12. I think I started pushing around 4 or 4:30 and Hadley was born a little after 6:00 p.m. and other than some grogginess (which was likely because of the drugs and magnesium drip I was on because of my high BP), I really can't complain about my labor experience. I did have a second degree tear but I don't blame that on the induction.
I do kind of feel like I missed out on the whole excitement of laboring at home, timing the contractions, water breaking and rushing off to the hospital, but overall, I was very happy with my induction experience.
1. DS was induced at 39 weeks because of doc's recommendation. She thinks that if we let him stay another week, he'll be too big for me to push. With DD, I was also induced after hours of labor. My water broke and I wasn't progressing much.
2. It went fine for both deliveries.
3. With DS, apparently I was already contracting every 6 minutes but I didn't feel much f it.
You know, with DD, she was late and I was scheduled to be induced at 41 weeks but DD decided to come out of her own at 40 weeks 6 days.
So hopefully, your baby will come out on her own when she realizes that there's already an eviction notice.
1) Yup at 41 weeks 3 days
2) went fine, although they really needed to crank the pictocin, I didn't even feel any contractions until I had been on it for over 7 hours. Cord got wrapped around her neck once, which may have been due to them breaking my water. And then the cord broke when the doctor was untangling it resulting in a really short umbilical stump, but other than that the baby was fine
3) 1 cm and 80% effaced for nearly 2 weeks beforehand, tried everything nearly everyday starting on my due date, stairs, walking, sex, spicy food....
I really wanted to wait it out too, but I really didn't feel like I missed anything until I saw Pam on the Office....
1. 12 days after due date. Nuff said. :-)
2. Pretty good, Did have to have a c-section though after 12 hours of labor. My son was in the posterior position and his shoulders just wouldn't come out. Doc said she would pull him out but would likely break his shoulder or collar bone. We opted for a c-section instead.
3. Doctor was shocked that I lasted that long. Was dilated 3 cm, fully dropped, lost plug all at 37 weeks.
