I called to make my first appt. with this new pregnancy and I can't believe Tacktill is not taking OB patients!! Well, I can believe it - I know his kids are grown and he has a retirement house in Asheville, and I figured he was going to start cutting down on responsibilities there...a typical "pre-retirement" thing.
But damn! He's my favorite doc there.
Dr. P was on call when I had DD #1 and I didn't have a good experience with her. That's what you get at a practice though right? I had a one in four chance of having the person I liked the least deliver my kid, and sure enough I got her.
I was lucky that Tacktill was on call when I had #2, and he of course was awesome.
I don't know much about Dr. S or Dr. B. I had a few check up appts. with them here and there, because I figured it was a crap shoot who would be on call when my kids were born and I wanted to meet all the docs. I was neither impressed nor not impressed with either of them.
But now I have a one in three chance of having Dr. P on call when #3 is born, and I really, really didn't have a good experience with her. (Don't want to be too scathing on here, as some folks might really like her).
My first appt. will be with Dr. S. Maybe I'll feel her out, and then meet with Dr. B next time and then decide if Tacktill leaving is a good enough reason for me to switch to a new OB. I'd want to find someone who delivers at Alexandria.
Re: Anyone go to OBGyn assoc of NoVA? And general ? re: switching OBs
I was in your situation last year in Jan when we found out we were finally expecting! So I just rotated to all of the doctors.
I agree w/ you and I do not like Dr. P. I was hoping that she would not be on call when I delivered and to my luck she wasn't.
Dr. S is great (only saw her once or twice)! She made me feel very comfortable and I had lots of silly first time mom questions and she didn't look down on you the way that Dr. P does. (Like you I won't go into details)
I saw Dr. B a lot and I really liked her. She is the one who ended up delivering DS. I know that some people don't like her, but I did. She took the time to answer all of my questions each appointment and didn't make me feel rushed. I switch and she will be my main doctor there instead of Dr. T. I figured on the chance that we do get pregnant again, I want to have consistency.
You can email me if you want to ask me more specific questions about Dr. B acissej9600 at gmail dot com
Good Luck and Congrats again!
I go there. Dr. S is great! She is super sweet, very understanding and patient. I saw Dr. P twice as my GYN and I really didn't like her. But when it came to choosing an OB, I didn't have time to "shop" around so I just went with their office. They will require you to rotate between all the docs so you get to know them all since any of them can be delivering you. I have been seeing Dr. S so far and once Dr. P last week (ugh!). I will see Dr. B next month and it will be my first time.
I just think that this will be the case with most practices, you can't possibly like every single doc and there may be a chance that the one you don't like will deliver you. I'm making myself feel better by saying the nurses will be there with me the most and the doc won't be there most of the time, but I'm hoping for Dr. S!
i missed your pg announcement too!!
Congrats!!!
They did hire a new doctor and he started this past summer, but he left the practice and started his own. Don't know the story on that . So I imagine they are looking for another new doctor.
Congrats again. :-)
I got there as well and Dr. P ended up delivering DD--and she did it safely after a long and hard a$s labor so it's hard to complain but her bedside manner was definitely the most, er, direct. If I had my pick, I was rooting for Dr. S to be on call for DD's delivery. She was so warm and I never felt pressed for time in the room with her.
i strongly disliked one of the MWs at my practice (there were 5 there, who rotated shifts). sure enough, the one i disliked was the one on call when i was in labor. i fully believe that i would have been much less likely to have had a c/s if she had NOT been my MW.
that being said, i believe that you should be comfortable wtih your care provider, whomever that is. if, for any reason, you are not, i advocate changing providers.
just because they are medical professionals, does not mean they are the best medical professional for you!
i have learned the importance of having a strong relationship with my labor care provider. for that reason, i'll never go back to a mutliple professional practice. it's solo provider all the way for me.
I am on the other side. Dr. P and Dr. S have been very good to me, Dr. B is not very well acquainted with High Risk Pregnancy and was grilling me on things that are normal for a woman in my situation but that she considered bad. She also told me that I would be getting an amnio (which is against my will) although the real story is that my High Risk doc decides and so far he didn't see it was necessary.
As for Physicians and Midwives, I went to them for nearly a decade as a gyn patient. They dropped me without a referral immediately after I became pregnant because I was deemed too high risk to treat. They told me this on the phone in a manner that was more like breaking up than anything else. "I see you have more appointments with us. Don't bother coming in as we won't be seeing you."
I may have a niche perspective but I will go with the doc who understands my conditions and respects me as a person.
